714     1841 silver tipstaff.
A fine and scarce example by JT bearing London hallmarks for 1841. Plain silver barrel surmounted by ornate Crown, the cap of crimson velvet. Minor service wear, generally VGC. (approx seven inches overall). (£350 - £400)
715     Royal Navy Officer’s stud box.
A very fine and most attractive circular silver example by the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company bearing hallmarks for London 1916. Domed tortoiseshell top inset with Officer’s cap badge device in silver. The box is raised on three legs. Fitted with a velvet lining. Minor wear generally VGC. Approx. 3 inches in diameter. 716     Boer War 27th Sqn (Devon) Imperial Yeomanry silver vesta case.
A very fine example by WN bearing hallmarks for Chester 1902. One side engraved <I>Sergt. H.C. Edwardes from Captn. E.S. Woodiwiss</I>, the other <I>27th Squadron (Devon) I.Y .1901-02</I>. Generally VGC. (£100 - £150)
Typed note accompanying the lot states 24580 Sgt. Edwardes was awarded the QSA with clasps Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. It further states he was wounded at Nordvil 30.09.01. The roll is signed by E.Stanley Woodiwiss, OC 27th Squadron, and is dated 30.11.01 Naauwpoort Nek, Transvaal.
717     Birkenhead and District VTC silver vesta case.
A very fine small example by W & H bearing hallmarks for Chester 1915. One side engraved with the unit’s cap badge and 22nd Jany. 1916, the other <I>W.H.L. from Lt.Col. M.C. Ellis</I>. Generally VGC. (£75 - £100)
718     Army Service Corps Goss “The Old Horse Shoe” plaque.
An attractive white china example in the form of a lucky horse shoe bearing a verse by Crowther, coloured transfer of the Corps badge and legend explaining the luck brought by a horse shoe. Generally VGC. (£40 - £60)
Plaque listed as a new shape and illustrated in the 8th edition of The Goss Record.
719     Nightingale School St Thomas Hospital Nurse’s badge.
A fine silver and blue enamel pinback Maltese cross example by JRG (JR Gaunt, London) bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1968. Reverse engraved “S.Pipe July 1969”. GC (£150 - £200)
720     Coldstream Guards 20th Century glass decanter.
An attractive example of “ship’s decanter” shape with four ring neck and hollow mushroom stopper. The body finely etched with the Garter Star. Generally VGC. (£100 - £120)
721     15th King’s Hussars Victorian Mess plate.
A good white kidney shaped side plate by Coalport with narrow blue line towards the rim and bearing blue transfer of the Royal Crest within the Garter resting in an open wreath bearing battle honours “Emsdorff Waterloo Peninsula”. GC (£30 - £50)
722     Boer War South Lancashire Regiment green Ladysmith Siege armband.
A rare example that would have been worn by a seller of flag days engaged in raising funds for the Regiment. The green silk band is gold printed with a flag and text “Sir Chas. Warren’s Division” over “Relief of Ladysmith” over “Buller Feb. 28, 1900 White”. Below this “South Lancashire Regt.”. Generally VGC. (£80 - £120)
723     Souvenir of “The Lone Tree” Symbol of Loos.
This section of “The Lone Tree” is sliced across the grain and bears a bullet head protruding from the centre. Mounted onto a polished bevelled edge base bearing a silver plaque engraved “Lone Tree Hulluch Sept 25 1915. A decorative object of this historic Great War landmark. Height 9 inches. GC (£300 - £500)
The Lone tree stood as a symbol in No Man’s land before the German trenches. In May 1915 as the Cherry tree blossomed, and the blossoms fell to the floor. A young Lieutenant on noght patrol climbed the branches and raised the Union flag. He was caught in the light of a flare and killed by machine gun fire. His body hung within the branches of the tree, and all attempts to retrieve the body failed. The Artillery were finally ordered to bombard the tree in an attempt to bury the young Officer. Branches were blown off the tree but it never received a direct hit. The stump remained 15 feet in the air. In 1920 the blossom returned. Accompanied by a number of photocopies of publication giving details of the Lone Tree.
724     Irish Guards Crested Shell Case and Head.
A fine example made by the Aynsley Factory. The Regimental Crest and title colour transfer is to the front. GC (£50 - £75)
725     Gold wristwatch bearing an Armorial Crest.
A very fine 9 carat gold, 15 jewel Swiss made example bearing gold import marks for London 1919. White enamel face and second hand at the 6 o’clock position. The reverse engraved with an Armorial Crest of a Lion and Cornet, with the motto “Droit Et Loyal”. Two small marks to the case otherwise VGC ... The watch is accompanied by a Seal, again with Armorial Crest and a selection of 9 Sporting Hockey Medals. Two are named to L.G. Dudley 1905/1906 of the 6th Jats, these being awarded to Captain Leonard Grey Dudley who was Killed in Action on the 24th November 1914 whilst serving with the 6th Jats. The other medals, of which one is engraved J.L.G Dudley, are for John Leonard Grey Dudley who served with the Royal Jat Light Infantry and later Royal Artillery and was awarded the OBE for services in Malaya The overall condition is good. The crest is believed to be a Branch of the Earl’s of Dudley, the engraved device appears on part of the Earl’s Arms.
The watch, although apparently in good working order, is offered as an historical item only; the instrument’s workings or accuracy are neither warranted or implied.
726     2nd Bn. Coldstream Guards Heavy-Weight prize boxing belt.
A fine and attractive silver mounted (HP London 1950) example of tapered dark blue leather with central crimson leather band. To the centre, a silver and enamel Warrant Officer’s pagri star; above the star a silver scroll inscribed “2nd Bn. Coldstream Guards” another below “Heavy-Weight”. On either side, two plain Garter stars engraved with winners’details from 1951 to 1969. (£400 - £600)
727     Royal Flying Corps gold brooch.
An attractive example in 9 carat gold in the form of a pilot’s wing set on a slender gold bar. GC (£30 - £50)
The formation of the Royal Flying Corps was authorised on 13th April 1912. On 1st April 1918 it merged with the RNAS to form the Royal Air Force under the command of Lieut. General Sir David Henderson KCB, KCVO, DSO.
728     6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) cravat pin.
A fine Victorian example comprising a Crowned blue enamel oval strap inscribed “Carabiniers”, the Crown with crimson enamel cap, the whole resting on crossed carbines. To the centre of the strap “VI DG” in blue enamel. Complete in associated cravat pin box. (£100 - £150)
729     Essex Imperial Yeomanry silver brooch and another.
An attractive example by FN bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1914 comprising Crowned motto strap, with County Arms to centre, resting on a scroll inscribed “Essex Imperial Yeomanry”; the whole mounted on a cavalry sabre. Brooch pin to reverse VGC ... together with a 9 carat gold rifle brooch bearing “S.Africa” entwined with Union spray. Old repair. (2 items) (£40 - £60)
730     Royal Artillery diamond set regimental brooch.
An attractive unmarked example. Flaming grenade in white gold resting on blue enamel scroll inscribed “Ubique” all mounted on a slender bar. The grenade is set with 45 small diamonds. VGC Housed in a Gieves box, possibly associated. (£80 - £120)
731     Bengal Artillery Early 19th century Officers’ Mess china.
This example is made by the Spode factory and bears both printed and impressed marks. The front is richly decorated to the front with transfers depicting floral and classical urns. The border is also richly decorated. The base has painted “Bengal Artillery” under the glaze. The Spode mark was first used in 1805. Two chips to the reverse not visible from the front. GC (£100 - £150)
The Bengal Artillery were granted the title Royal in 1858.
732     35th Regiment Indian Army Officers’ Mess Plate.
This large serving plate is of white china decorated to the centre with a transfer depicting a Victorian regimental device. The edge decorated with gilt lines. Length 12 1/2 inches. Little wear GC. (£60 - £100)
733     The King’s Own Regiment Officers’ Mess plate.
This example is a tureen base of white china decorated with a blue transfer of the Regimental deviceamd blue and gold line decoration to the edge. Some wear GC. (£30 - £50)
734     An Impressive Victorian Officers’ Mess China retailer’s plate.
This fine quality example would have been used by a china retailer to show various regiments the quality of their ware and detail of the regimental crests. This white china plate is decorated with a large number of regimental badges including: 57th Foot, 36th Regiment Royal Artillery. 55th Foot, The Cameronians, Royal Berkshire Regiment to name but a few. Colours remain bright and fresh VGC. (£200 - £300)
735     Great War Zeppelin Souvenirs of Captain Feron
This souvenirs were collected by Captain Ralph Feron of the 3rd Mobile Anti Aircraft Brigade operating on the East Coast. Comprising: A Bomb fragment the reverse with a hand written label “Fragment of a bomb (one of many) dropped by a Zepp on the A Battery 3 AA Bde at Playford Suffolk August 1916. ... Burnt fragment of part of a cotton flag. White with broad red line. Two small fragments of the canvas with burn edges. ... Piece of allow with a brass nut. ... 744     59th Scinde Rifles Royal Worcester Officers’ Mess plate.
This example is of white china with a colour transfer to the centre of the regimental device. Edged with a wide crimson border with gilt line decoration. The reverse with maker’s transfer indicating a date of 1912. Little wear, near VGC. (£60 - £80)
745     South Lancashire Regiment Sergeants’ Mess plate.
This white pottery soup plate is decorated with a green transfer of the rgimental device depicting a Sphinx, surmounted by the Prince of Wales feathers and XL “The Prince of Wales Volunteers below. GC (£30 - £50)
746     Manchester Regiment Officers’ Mess plate.
This soup plate was made by the Coalport Factory. To the centre is a Victorian Regimental device, bearing title. The border is of a green colour with gilt decoration. The potter’s mark to the base would indicate 1891 to 1901. GC slight wear. (£60 - £80)
747     Gordon Highlanders Officers’ Mess plate.
This side plate was made by the Minton Factory. The border is of a rich blue colour decorated with a gilt regimental device. The base with both potter’s mark and retailer’s stamp. circa 1938. Near VGC. (£40 - £60)
748     Royal Tank Regiment Officers’ Mess plate.
This side plate was made by the Royal Worcester Factory. . To the centre a gilt transfer of a pre 1953 Regimental device. The edge decorated with red and gold. Maker’s mark to the base GC, slight wear. (£40 - £60)
749     Victorian 3rd Bn The Black Watch Officers’ Mess plate.
This scarce example by the Minton factory would have been used by Officers of the Militia Battalion. To the centre is a painted regimental device bearing a Victorian Crown and the title 3rd Battalion. Decorated with a cream border. Maker’s stamp to the base (£60 - £100)
