Fitted with silvered lion head bosses which support the chinchain (backing absent) The interior retains leather sweatband and crimson silk lining Fitted with an associated plume of black ostrich feathers over scarlet vulture feathers. A good brown fur example fitted with a plain scarlet bag The interior retains leather sweatband and crimson silk lining with tailors gold embossed stamp of Hobson & Sons, London. The busby has provision for a plume, which is now absent. Some age wear, bullion cords to the body absent and only part of leather chinstrap present. | 834     61st (South Gloucestershire) Foot Officers 1869-78 Shako. Dark blue melton cloth body and crown, with patent leather peak. Two bands of quarter inch gold lace to top of the crown, one row around the base. To the front a fire gilt plate comprising a laurel wreath surmounted by a Crown. Within the wreath the Garter, within the Garter a pierced number 61. White over red wool pom-pom supported by an ornate gilt holder with plain ball. Complete with velvet backed chin chain (stitching faults) supported by gilt rose pattern bosses and at the rear by a gilt lions mask. The silk lining and sweatband to the interior is now absent. Gilt of shako plate remains bright and fresh. GC (£300 - £400) |
| 835     2nd KEO Gurkha Rifles Officers service dress cap. A good khaki example by T.M. Baboo Rao of Bangalore. The front bearing black cord boss mounted with silver Prince of Waless plumes. Dark brown leather chinstrap supported by two bronze Kings Crown buttons. Grey quilted silk lining, brown leather sweatband. GC (£30 - £50) |

| 837     Zulu War / Boer War period Officers Foreign Service helmet. A rare late 19th century Officers helmet typical of the shape associated with these campaigns. A six panel whitened body with leather binding and single tape pagri. The interior with green cotton to the front and rear peaks. Complete with leather sweatband, with crimson cotton edging. Also bearing a label Regulation Cork Hemet and retaining a paper name label of Capt R.C. Aubrey. Complete with a chinchain (leather backing absent). The condition and shape remain good. VGC (See Lot 348 for his headdress, pouch belt etc. and 988 for his sword) (£600 - £800) The shape of the Foreign Service pattern helmet loosely mirrored that of the Home Service pattern helmet. Captain Richard C Aubrey is known to have served with the 1st VB Manchester Regiment. |
| 838     1908 Other Ranks Wolseley foreign service helmet A rare early example of the issue foreign service helmet with large pagri. The interior retaining leather sweatband and clear 1908 makers stamp and WD 1908 issue stamp. The helmet remains in clean condition and a good shape. Evidence of a cap badge being worn at the front. | 839     8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars Officers tent cap. A good example of dark green cloth with gold lace band of shamrock regimental pattern and gold Russian braid piping. Some service wear, bullion dulled. GC. ... Accompanied by a letter of provenance. (£60 - £100) The letter states that this cap was worn by Captain Samuel Robinson MC. He served pre Great War with the 8th Hussars, but transferring to the 21st Lancers and won the Military Cross whilst attached to the machine Gun Corps in 1916. |
| 840     Royal Horse Guards parade helmet. A Composite example. German silver Officers pattern skull, fitted with Other Ranks pattern brass and silvered Kings Crown helmet plate to front. To each side, a gilded rose head boss supports the leather backed chin chain. A silvered plume holder supports a scarlet horsehair plume with button pattern boss. Complete with leather lining, this with heavy wear and stitching faults. Minor service wear and some dents GC (£500 - £700) |
| 841     3rd (The Prince of Wales) Dragoon Guards Officers helmet. A fine 1871 example. The gilt brass skull decorated with laurel leaves; to the front a helmet plate of a silvered backing star with pierced gilt Garter on a blue enamel ground and to the centre, Prince of Wales plumes (scarlet enamel ground absent). A fluted brass spike supports a black over red regimental pattern horsehair plume with rose boss. To each side are rose head bosses which support a gilt velvet lined chin chain. The interior retaining the original padded cotton lining. Gilt remains fresh. GC (£1,500 - £1,800) |

The welt of the crown with a silver bullion line, the centre of the crown with purl button. The interior with leather sweatband, crimson silk lining and gold tooled tailors details of Hawkes & Co. Complete with thin black patent leather chin strap. Bullion remains bright GC. (£120 - £150) |
| 843     9th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment Officers astrakhan rifle cap A very fine and scarce example of black lambs wool by Hawkes & Co. of Piccadilly worn by Captain R.B. Lister. To the front, a swag of plaited mohair cord which rises to either side and secured by a small blacked strung bugle device. To the front, a blackened Gloucestershire Regiment device, Sphinx resting on a blank plinth with separate oval black cord boss bearing a Crown above. The crown of the cap is of green melton cloth ornamented with mohair cord design. The interior with leather sweatband and silk lining. Retains original black vulture feather and scarlet ostrich feather plume mounted into a blackened silver plume holder. Complete with cap cords. | 846     PWV South Lancashire Regiment Officers field service cap. A good scarce example by Charagadin Bros, Army Contractor, India. Dark blue melton cloth body, curtain and peak with buff crown; gold Russia piping to the curtain and peak. Complete with bullion Prince of Wales' plumes cap badge and two gilt buttons mounted with silvered Prince of Wales' plumes and gilt PWV cypher. Black cotton lining. | 847     Royal Dragoons 1847 (Albert) pattern helmet. An attractive restored example, the silvered skull decorated with gilt leaf design. Helmet plate comprises a wreath, half of laurel, half of oak; within the wreath an ornate shield surmounted by a Crown. On the shield, an eight pointed silvered hobnail star mounted with a brass strap inscribed The Royal Dragoons with VR Cypher to centre. Replacement rose head bosses support the replacement leather backed brass chin chain. The plume holder of leaf design supports a black flowing horsehair plume with a replacement rose head boss. The interior retaining partial leather sweatband. A good display item. (£300 - £500) |
| 848     Lanarkshire Yeomanry Victorian Officers helmet. A scarce example following the design of the 1878 Infantry pattern Home Service Helmet. Skull of dark blue cloth in four panels, front peak edged with gilt metal; gilt metal cross piece, spike and spine. Circular thistle ornamented bosses bearing double headed eagles support a velvet backed chin chain (stitching faults). To the front, a fine gilt eight pointed hobnail star mounted with oval gilt strap inscribed Lanarkshire Yeomanry; to the centre, on a burnished gilt ground, a silver double headed eagle with bell in one claw. Around the base of the skull, a gilt metal ornate half inch band. Leather sweatband topped with cotton edging. The helmet is with some age wear with moth surface traces and some moth holes. The gilt is toned to a matching colour. GC (£400 - £700) |
| 849     1st (City of Bristol) Gloucestershire Rifle Vols Victorian Officers helmet. A good and rare example of the light dark green cloth Home Service Pattern helmet complete with blackened metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses. The bosses support a blackened gimp interlinked chinchain (only part present backing cloth absent). To the front, a Crowned Maltese cross plate with lions between the arms; to the centre, the Arms of Bristol within a circlet inscribed 1 Glos City of Bristol RV. Retains cream silk topped leather sweatband to the interior. The helmet retains a good shape, but with some age wear GC (£500 - £750) |
| 850     French Gendarmerie Troopers helmet. A fine example. Burnished brass skull with silvered helmet plate to the front depicting a flaming grenade. Mounted on the crown, a silvered metal comb ornamented with floral leaf decoration to either side. The front bears Medusas head looking forward, from the comb flows a black horse hair plume and bristle brush. To the left side, a brass plume holder supports a cut feather plume of the National colours of red, white and blue. A pair of lions head circular brass bosses support a set of leather backed silvered chin scales. The interior retains original leather lining. GC (£650 - £750) |
| 851     Royal Horse Guards troopers helmet. A good post 1901 example. Burnished silvered skull surmounted by a brass eight pointed star plate from which emerges a silvered plume holder supporting a scarlet horsehair plume with silvered button pattern boss. To the front, a helmet plate comprising a wreath, half of laurel half of oak, surrounding the Collar of the Order of the Garter and surmounted by an Edward Crown. Mounted to centre is the Star of the Order of the Garter. To each side of the skull, a gilded rose head boss supports the leather backed brass chin chain. Complete with its original leather lining. | 852     Royal Fusiliers Volunteer Battalion Officers fur cap. A scarce example of brown bearskin. To the front a silvered regimental pattern grenade, the ball mounted with a silvered pierced Crowned Garter on a blue enamel ground. Within the Garter, the Rose in silver; below the Garter, in silver, the White Horse. The interior retains leather sweatband and full cotton lining. Contained in a metal storage tin. The fur remains in good condition, sweatband now part loose chinstrap absent. .. Accompanied by a white cut feather plume and also a yellow plume. (£350 - £400) |

| 854     8th Co. 2nd Somerset Rifle Volunteers Other Ranks shako. A rare example of grey felt with dark blue piping to the welt of the crown. Plain black patent leather peak and chinstrap. To the front a white metal badge of a Crowned wreath encircling a title strap 2nd Battn Somerset Rifle Volunteers with 8 to the centre. Complete with original wool ball tuft, the interior with leather sweatband and large printed tailors details of Hawkes & Co. London. (£600 - £700) 8th Corps Somerset RV formed at Wellington 28.2.1860; in August became part of 2nd Admin. Battalion whose HQ was at Taunton. After 1880 it became C Company, 2nd Somerset RVC; in October 1882 the 2nd Somerset RVC became 2nd VB Somerset Light Infantry. |

A post 1902 example of an Officers Home Service Pattern blue cloth helmet complete with gilt metal cross piece, spike and rose head bosses supporting a leather backed chin chain. To the front, a gilt metal eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Kings Crown; mounted on the star a laurel wreath enclosing the Garter. Within the Garter, a silver Sphinx resting on a tablet set on a black velvet ground. To the base of the wreath an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed The Gloucestershire Regiment. The interior retaining leather sweatband. Overall GC gilt dulled, evidence of another helmet plate having been worn. (£350 - £400) |
| 856     1913 Royal Artillery sealed pattern Brodrick cap. A rare example of dark blue material with scarlet piping and panel to the cap badge. The interior with a black cotton lining and oilskin sweatband. Bears issue stamps, WD 1914 plus original 1913 paper label. Retaining wax seal indicating a sealed pattern. Overall condition is good, however there is one section with moth holes and damage, not effecting the overall appearance. (£80 - £120) |
| 857     Royal Air Force Officers full dress busby. A rare pre war example. The skull is of black chromed leather, trimmed with seal dyed nutria. To the front gold and blue plaited lace cord. The busby bears a gilt and silver Royal Air Force Crest. The plume is of dyed ostrich feathers, with a gold bullion and blue basket weave holder. The interior retains leather sweatband, and the quilted cotton lining bears the tailors label of Gieves Ltd London. The sweatband with the initials G.E.W.. Slight age wear, with a small bald patch to the rear fur. GC (£400 - £500) |

To the front, a silvered eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Victorian Crown. Mounted on the star a laurel wreath. Within the wreath a silvered Maltese Cross surmounted by a wreath of oak. Silvered scrolls The Derbyshire Regt applied to the arms of the cross. To the centre a silver Stag set on a field of blue enamel. also mounted with a scroll 2nd Volunteer Battalion. Leather sweatband to the interior, with crimson silk edging. One rose boss and interlinked chinchain is now absent. The helmet has heavy moth damage to the front and other parts but helmet plate remains a good example. Skull of dark blue cloth in four panels, front peak trimmed with gilt metal; gilt metal cross piece, spike, spine and rose head bosses supporting the velvet backed chinchain. To the front, a gilt metal eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Kings Crown; mounted on the star a laurel wreath enclosing the Garter. Within the Garter, a Rose in silver and gilt set on a black velvet ground. To the base of the wreath an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed The York and Lancaster Regiment(left tip of scroll absent). Leather sweatband to the interior. Gilt Royal Arms helmet plate to the front. The interior retains leather sweatband. Slight wear, all gilt mounts matching. Housed in storage tin. Overall good clean condition. | 867     A pattern Brodie helmet and original sacking cover. A rare raw edge A pattern example with sand painted green finish to the shell. Complete with liner, cushion and pink Brodie stamp. The leather chin strap remains supple. The helmet is complete with original sacking issue pattern cover made of four parts with draw string tightener. To the left side, Battalion formation flash possibly for the Hampshire Regiment. The helmet is in good condition, the cover has broken at the raw edge line, but lower section remains. Otherwise GC. (£450 - £500) The 14th battalion Hampshire Regiment used this combination of colour and triangle, but the other way round. |
| 868     Monmouthshire Rifle Volunteers Officers astrakhan rifle cap. A scarce example of black lambs wool. To the front a swag of plaited green mohair cord, which rises to either side. To the front, a bronze dragon above this an oval green cord boss bearing a blackened Victorian Crown. The crown of the cap is of black melton cloth ornamented with a star mohair cord. A silver tri-leaf boss supports a green vulture and and black horse hair plume. The interior with leather sweatband (partially detached) and silk lining (slightly shot). | 869     Victorian Staff Officers cocked hat. A good clean example of black beaver by Cater of London. To the left side a black silk rosette with a loop of gold lace secured with a gold purl button. Ornamented with black lace of oak leaf and acorn design. At each end, bullion tassels. The interior retains leather sweatband and cream silk pleated lining.
