1056     Great War Aviators Style Leather Flying Coat A good example of light brown soft leather of the colour associated with flying clothing of the RFC. This example is tailored single breasted, with pockets to the waist and without collar. The interior with cotton lining and an additional blanket lining. To the cuffs press studs of the open Great War pattern. Leather remains very supple clean condition. (£200 - £250) |
| 1057     RFC Cowl pattern flying helmet, near unissued condition. A very good example of the type. The helmet is of soft brown leather and is of the pattern which was standard issue to Aircrew 1917/18. Complete with both ear rolls and leather and string chin strap. The interior retains the wool lining and fur section. Retaining original ink WD issue stamp of the correct period style. Leather remains supple and clean VGC. (£300 - £400) |
| 1058     A rare Warren style aviators flying helmet by Christys London Made by Christys hatters of London. Brown hardened leather shell with padding, leather ear flaps with buckle and strap to the chin. The interior retains leather lining and scarce paper tailors label stating Aviators Safety helmet. Also with an ink name Elliott. The helmet has some age and service wear, but remains a good example of the type. (£260 - £300) This pattern of helmet was popular with early aviators and was issued by the RFC to front line pilots during the early part of the war and then was used for trainee pilots. |
| 1059     Royal Flying Corps Other Ranks Field Service Cap. A scarce example of the ORs khaki serge side cap fitted with brass RFC badge and General Service buttons. The interior with silver grey cloth sweatband and retaining both interior hooks for the attachment of a leather chinstrap (strap absent). Also with WD issue stamp. Heavy service wear and the opposite side to the badge are two sizeable moth holes and one smaller hole. (£80 - £120) |
| 1060     Great War Royal Flying Corps pilots flying gauntlets. A rare pair of soft brown leather Trigger pattern flying gloves lined with white lambs wool. This pair is tailored with forefinger and thumb separate from the mittens central section. Complete with wrist strap with open pattern press studs. A little wool lost to the interior, leather a good colour and supple. Near VGC. (£340 - £400) This pattern is solely associated with the flying service. |
| 1061     Great War period United States Aviation Service pilots tunic. A scarce early example worn by a Junior pilot holding the rank of Lieutenant. Light coloured brown material, tailored with breast and waist pockets and stand collar. The latter retains bronze US titles and Air Branch winged propellor. To the left breast silver bullion pilots wings comprising a US shield to the centre flanked by wings, which do not touch the shield. To the shoulder straps 1st Lieutenants rank bars. The tunic is unlined. Accompanied by matching breeches. The overall condition is near VGC, although the bullion to the wings has oxidised. GC. (£500 - £700) |
| 1062     RAF Air Vice Marshals mess uniform. This example is attributed to AVM A.C. Sanderson CB., CBE., DFC a veteran of the RFC. The jacket is with gold rank lace to the cuffs, to the left collar bullion Kings crown pilots wings and provision for medals (now with a set of non associated miniature medals). Complete with Kings crown buttons. Tailor's label with ink typed name dated 1932. ... Waistcoat of Regulation pattern (Queens Crown buttons). ... Overalls with RAF gold lace line. These again with a typed named label and date 1935 (possibly for the RAF Parade uniform). Overall GC with service wear. (3 items) (£60 - £100) Air Vice Marshal Alfred Clifford Sanderson joined the RFC in 1916 and served in France with 16 & 46 Squadrons. Remaining with the RAF he was appointed a Flight Lieutenant in 1922 and was appointed to Air Rank in 1942. During the second world war he served in Malta and Egypt and in the early post war years served in the Far East being appointed Air Officer Commanding Malaya 1948-49. In 1952 he held the post of Director General of Personnel at the Air Ministry. |

| 1064     The RNAS & RFC Operational Log Books and Archive of Lt G.H. Baker. An impressive grouping of items appertaining to Lieutenant Geoffrey Harold Baker who flew operationally with 211 Squadron BEF and was wounded on the 16th August 1918. Comprising: RNAS Log Book 2nd December 1917 to 16th August 1918 (operational flights). ... RFC Pilots Log Book 12th October 1918 to 12th February 1919 (Instruction and training flights RAF Eastchurch). ... RNAS Pilot certificate. ... RNAS pattern gilt pilot wings, with three screw back posts and backing plate. ... Letter stating wounded in the arm above the elbow, this complete with the original piece of shrapnel. ... Large amount of ephemera including RNAS commissions, training books etc. ... Selection of RNAS / RAF gilt tunic buttons and cuff eagles. ... Miniature medal group of the BWM, VM and Defence Medal. ... Section of laminated wooden propellor blade retaining makers transfer. ... Propellor boss mounted for display. Overall GC (quantity). (£400 - £600) Lieutenant Geoffrey Harold Baker was appointed a Probationary Flight Officer in the RNAS September 1917. Undertaking pilot instruction he soloed on the 13th December 1917 at RNAS Eastbourne. He was posted to 211 Squadron and first flew with them on the 30th March 1918. In the following months the log records a large number of bombing raids and photo reconnaissance operations. On a number of occasions enemy aircraft were spotted and engaged. The last page of the 1st log records on the 16th August Bombing raid Windscreen nosepiece and ? hit just before reaching target carried on but made poor hits. Came back in a hurray after watching Capt ? and Lt Harris, Doorwell and ? to H (possibly Holland) V Heavy AA He was admitted into Hospital. The second log book shows that he recommenced flying on the 12th October 1918 at the Marine Observers School at RAF Eastchurch. Baker applied for a short service commission and appears to have left the RAF in the early 1920s. Returning to his home town of High Wycombe he served with the Home Guard in WWII and the Second phase period of the 1950s. He also had the honour to be appointed the Mayor of High Wycombe on a number of occasions. |
| 1065     Two bladed wooden propellor This two blade has been attributed to a Saunders Roe flying boat of the type used by 209 Squadron in early 1932. The boss with various stampings including Drg No. Z258/2 Whirlwind IX June/32. Retaining nearly all of the green painted finish and brass leading edge. One blade with a colour makers transfer. The overall condition is good, with a little wear to the tips. GC. Overall length 8 ft. (£400 - £600) The attribution to aircraft type has been supplied by the vendor. |
| 1066     1918 Propeller Tip Texas Trench Art. This unusual example is made from a tip of a propellor, which is carved Texas 1918 RAF. Also mounted with a beaten copper frame holding a photograph of a Curtis Jenny training aircraft in flight. Little wear GC. (£60 - £80) In the winter of 1917 / 1918 the RFC operated a training field near Fort Worth. This was continued by the newly formed RAF after April 1918. 39 Officer and Cadets would loose their lives due to accidents. |
| 1067     Polish Air Force Officers dagger. A good post war example with plain blade numbered 17097; simulated ivory grip surmounted with plain pommel bearing uncrowned eagle. Housed in its black leather scabbard with chrome mounts and two loose rings; the top mount bearing miniature swooping eagle pilots badge. GC (£60 - £80) |
| 1068     WWII Air Gunners log book & ephemera. A scarce example compiled by an Air Gunner Warrant Officer J.H. Gilpin of 214 Squadron that operated Short Sterling Bombers and later the American Flying Fortress. The log begins with Training in Canada on the 14th October 1942 and ends on the 24th May 1945. The log is accompanied by Flying Clothing cards, some photographs and a selection of ephemera to Gilpin and RAF ground Gunner who was taken POW. Overall GC the log with a little age wear. (£200 - £300) After starting training Warrant Officer J.H. Gilpin was posted to 26 OTU before joining 214 Squadron operating the Short Sterling bomber in July 1943. His first trip was an easy mine laying operation however the log states Shot up over large enemy convoy Badly damaged. His following trip to Hamburg resulted in being attacked by three JU88 night fighters. Another trip with bad luck was on the 22nd September 1943 ops to Hanover Shot up by ME210 over base own A/C Badly Damaged. This was a common German practice falling upon tied crews who mind would often by thinking of debriefing and bed. The Squadron converted to the Flying Fortress and the Squadrons first operation on the type flown by Gilpin was on the night of the 20th April 1944 to Paris. Gilpin flew a number of trips on the type and finished his first tour in July 1944 after 19 operations. Although this seems a small amount of operations he had survived 1 year on the Squadron. The log gives good detail to the trips, which seemed to more often than not include Night Fighter attacks and getting home on three engines. After a shot time of being screened from ops he was undertaking a Lancaster conversion course at the time the war ended. |
| 1069     1946 Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur Harris signature. This ink signature appears on a Order of Proceedings sheet, when Sir Arthur was presented with the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Chepping Wycombe. The presentation took place on the 4th February 1946 at High Wycombe. GC. ... Accompanied by a booklet regarding Bomber Command and the US 8th Air Force links with High Wycombe. | 1070     Great War period RFC, RNAS & RAF Lewis Aircraft Camera Gun. This rare example of a MK. 3 camera gun was produced by Thornton Pickard Co. Ltd. Retains original drum magazine and contained in original wooden transportation case. Both the case and the camera gun stencilled with MK. 3 270. Little age wear to painted finish. GC.
