1     Welch Regiment Victorian Officer’s helmet plate.
A fine and scarce example. Gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star, a laurel wreath enclosing the Garter. Within the Garter, in silver, the Prince of Wales’s plumes with “Gwell augau neu chwilydd” scroll set on a black velvet ground. To the base of the wreath, an applied silver scroll inscribed “The Welch Regiment”. Three loops to reverse. Generally VGC. (£200 - £300)
Note this is probably an early example. Later centres appear to have a more “horseshoe” motto scroll.
2     38th Bengal Infantry 1844-55 Officer’s “Albert” shako plate.
An exceedingly fine and scarce example. Rich gilt ten pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star a wreath half of laurel, half palm bearing silver honour scrolls for “Candahar Seringapatam Ghuznee”. Within the wreath a strap inscribed “Bengal Vol. Light Infantry”; to centre, a skull surmounted crossed socket bayonets with strung bugle and 38 set on a black velvet ground. On the junction of the wreath, a scroll inscribed “Cabool 1842”. Reverse retains both original horizontal loops as well as both pairs of wires behind the Crown. VGC (£600 - £800)

3     North Staffordshire Regiment Victorian Officer’s helmet plate.
A fine and scarce 1881-1901 example. Gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. Mounted on the star, a laurel wreath enclosing the Garter; within the Garter, in silver, Prince of Wales’s plumes, set on a black velvet ground. To the base of the wreath, an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed “The North Staffordshire Regiment” . Three loops to reverse. Near VGC. (£200 - £300)
4     39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment Officer’s 1869-78 shako plate.
An exceptionally fine and scarce example. Within a gilt Crowned laurel wreath, the Garter; silver Castle, Key and Motto to centre. Gilt tri-part scroll inscribed “Primus in Indis” mounted on the base of the wreath. Two loops to reverse. VGC (£300 - £400)
Became 1st Bn Dorsetshire Regiment on 1st July 1881.

5     55th (Westmoreland) Regiment Officer’s 1829-44 “Belltop” shako plate.
An extremely fine and exceedingly scarce example. Large rich gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star, a cut silver star bearing gilt full laurel wreath. Within the wreath, a pierced rope edged strap inscribed “Westmoreland” on a blue enamel ground; to the centre, seeded gilt “LV” on a crimson translucent enamel ground. Reverse retains both original horizontal loops. Orb and cross reaffixed at some stage. VGC (£1,000 - £1,200)

6     25th (King’s Own Borderers) Regiment Officer’s 1869-78 shako plate.
An exceptionally fine and scarce example. Within a gilt Crowned laurel wreath, the Garter; to the centre, in silver, Edinburgh Castle over XXV”. Mounted on the base of the wreath, a silver scroll inscribed “Nisi dominus frustra”. Two replacement loops to reverse. VGC (£300 - £400)
7     67th (South Hampshire) Regiment Officer’s 1878-81 helmet plate.
An exceptionally fine and scarce short lived example. Rich gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star within a laurel wreath, the Garter. To the centre, the Royal Tiger over 67 in silver set on a black velvet ground. Three loops to reverse. VGC (£400 - £500)
8     Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment Victorian Officer’s waist belt clasp.
An extremely fine post 1881 silver and gilt example with matching numbers to both halves. Circlet inscribed “Pristinae virtutis memor”; the centre mounted with Paschal Lamb in silver. VGC (similar to Ryan 163) (£120 - £150)
9     98th (Prince of Wales’s) Regiment Officer’s 1878-81 helmet plate.
An exceptionally fine and scarce short lived example. Rich gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star within a laurel wreath, the Garter. To the centre, the Prince of Wales’s plumes over XCVIII in silver set on a black velvet ground. Mounted on the base of the Garter, the China Dragon in silver. Three loops to reverse. In 1876 the title “Prince of Wales’s” was conferred on the Regiment. Became 2nd Bn. North Staffordshire Regt. on Friday 1st July 1881
10     King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Victorian Officer’s helmet plate.
A fine scarce 1891-1901 example. Gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. Mounted on the star, a laurel wreath; within the wreath, the Garter; to the centre a silvered French horn with central Rose set on a black enamel ground. Mounted on the base of the gilt wreath, a silver tri-part scroll inscribed “The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry”. Three loops to reverse. Slight verdigris to edges in parts, near VGC. A splendid scarce 1879-1901 rich gilt example. Eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. On the star, within a laurel wreath, the Garter with ASC Cypher to centre. Two loops to reverse. VGC (see KK 980) (£100 - £200)

A fine and rare example. Gilt Royal Arms pierced around the shield, an applied scroll below bearing laurel spray in place of the usual “Ubique” Below the scroll, a gun with mounted wheel and below the gun a scroll inscribed “Hants. Artillery”. Three loops to reverse. VGC (£300 - £500)
14     34th Foot (Cumberland), Officer’s 1844-55 “Albert” shako plate.
An exceptionally fine and rare example. Rich gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown, the principal rays bearing battle honours. Mounted on the star, within a laurel wreath, a circlet inscribed “Cumberland Regt.” with silver seeded “34” to centre. Mounted on the base of the wreath, a tri-part scroll inscribed “”Arroyo dos Molinos”. Reverse retains both original horizontal loops and three of four wires behind the Crown. Top pearl on cross surmounting Crown now absent otherwise VGC. (£600 - £800)
15     Donegal Artillery Officer’s helmet plate circa 1889-1900.
A fine and rare example. Gilt Royal Arms pierced around the shield, a scroll below inscribed “Ubique”. Below the scroll, a gun with mounted wheel and below the gun a scroll inscribed “Donegal Artillery” mounted over the “Quo fas et gloria ducunt” scroll. Gun offcentre. Three loops to reverse (top one an old replacement). VGC (£200 - £400)

16     Honourable Artillery Company Victorian Officer’s waist belt clasp.
An exceptionally fine and scarce variant silver and gilt example with matching benchmarks to both halves. It follows the pattern worn by the Grenadier Guards. Circlet inscribed “Honorable Artillery Company”; mounted on the seeded gilt centre, a silver flaming grenade, the ball of the grenade bearing gilt Crowned VR Cypher, reversed and interlaced. Universal pattern rococo ends. VGC (£100 - £200)
17     Border Regiment Victorian Officer’s 1881-91 helmet plate.
A fine and scarce example. Rich gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. Mounted on the star, a laurel wreath; within the wreath, the Garter; within the Garter, in silver, a laurel wreath enclosing the Dragon surmounted by “China” all on dead white enamel and translucent red enamel ground. Mounted on the base of the gilt wreath, a silver tri-part scroll inscribed “The Border Regiment”. Three loops to reverse. VGC (£300 - £400)
In 1891 the helmet plate changed to the more usual pattern as KK 247.
18     100th (Royal Canadians) Regiment Officer’s shako plate circa 1861-69.
A fine and exceedingly scarce composite example. Gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star a gilt circlet inscribed “Prince of Wales’s Royal Canadian Regt.”. Silver Prince of Wales’s plumes and replacement gilt metal “100” to burnished gilt centre. Small fracture to circlet at 6 o’clock. Two horizontal loops to reverse. (£200 - £300)
Became 1st Bn. Leinster Regiment on Friday, 1st July 1881
19     Berkshire Regiment Victorian Officer’s helmet plate circa 1881-85.
A fine and scarce example. Gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. Mounted on the star, a laurel wreath enclosing the Garter. Within the Garter, in silver the Stag under an oak tree set on a scarlet velvet ground. To the base of the wreath, an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed “The Berkshire Regiment”. Three loops to reverse. Some verdigris to edges and top of Crown otherwise near VGC. (£300 - £400)
Title “Royal” conferred in recognition of the distinguished gallantry of 1st Battalion at Tofrek on 22nd March 1885.
20     19th (1st York, North Riding) Regiment Officer’s 1869-78 shako plate.
An exceptionally fine and scarce example. Within a gilt Crowned laurel wreath, the Garter; “19” pierced in the seeded centre. Two loops to reverse, two wires to reverse of Crown clipped. VGC (£300 - £400)
21     21st Royal North British Fusiliers 1844-55 Officer’s shako plate.
An exceptionally fine and extremely scarce example worn on the Albert pattern shako. Large die-stamped gilt flaming grenade, the ball mounted with the Royal Arms. Retains two original loops to reverse as well as one of a pair of wires. VGC (£500 - £700)
August 1854 saw the regiment, under Frederick George Ainslie, embark at Cork for the Crimea where it landed with Sir George Cathcart’s Division. Fought at the Alma and with great distinction and heavy loss at Inkerman; it served through the siege of Sevastopol including the assault on the Redan of 18th June 1855. Embarked at Balaclava for Malta in June 1856. This actual piece is photographed as No. 87A in “Head-dress Badges of the British Army”.
22     54th (West Norfolk) Regiment Officer’s 1869-78 shako plate.
An exceptionally fine and scarce example. Within a gilt Crowned laurel wreath, the Garter; “54” pierced in the seeded centre. Gilt Sphinx resting on a tablet inscribed “Egypt” mounted on the base of the wreath. Two loops to reverse. VGC (£300 - £400)
Became 2nd Bn Dorsetshire Regiment on 1st July 1881. “Marabout” granted in December 1841.

23     Northumberland Fusiliers Victorian Officer’s glengarry badge.
A very fine and unusual variant. Gilt flaming grenade, mounted on the ball, gilt St. George and Dragon within a gilt circlet inscribed “Qu0 fata vocant”. Two loops to reverse. VGC (£150 - £200)
24     King’s Shropshire Light Infantry Victorian Officer’s helmet plate.
A fine and scarce 1881-91 example. Gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. Mounted on the star, a laurel wreath enclosing the Garter; within the Garter, in silver, a strung bugle with gilt “KLI” between the strings, set on a green velvet ground. To the base of the wreath, an applied silver tri-part scroll inscribed “The Shropshire Lt. Infty.” . Three loops to reverse. Near VGC. (£200 - £300)
In 1891 the scroll was altered to “King’s Shropshire Lt. Infty.”.
25     Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry Victorian Officer’s helmet plate.
A fine scarce 1881-1901 example. Gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown. Mounted on the star, a laurel wreath; within the wreath, the Garter; to the centre a strung bugle bearing silver castle with red feathers set on a green velvet ground. Mounted on the base of the gilt wreath, a silver tri-part scroll inscribed “The Duke of Cornwall’s Lt. Infy.”. Three loops to reverse. VGC (£200 - £300)
Several small holes to reverse indicate the plate was an 1878-81 example converted whilst in service to the post 1881 devices.
26     67th (South Hampshire) Regiment Officer’s 1869-78 shako plate.

27     5th Foot (Northumberland) Officer’s “Waterloo” shako plate circa 1812-16.
An extremely fine and rare die-stamped gilt on copper example. The Crowned rococo shape with large “GR” and numeral “5” at the base. The reverse with two original long copper loop fasteners. VGC (£800 - £1,000)

28     62nd (Wiltshire) Regiment Officer’s 1869-78 shako plate.
An exceptionally fine and scarce example. Within a gilt Crowned laurel wreath, the Garter; “62” pierced in the seeded centre. Two loops to reverse. VGC (£300 - £400)
29     St Margaret & St John’s Association (Westminster) Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1798-1801.
A very fine and rare gilt on copper oval plate with engraved designs. A Crowned circular strap “St Margaret & St John’s Association” enclosing the arms of the two churches and of Westminster. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising single hook at the top and two studs at the bottom and retains original chamois liner. VGC (£600 - £800)
OC Robert, Viscount Belgrave. Re-raised in 1803 as a full battalion, “Volunteers” replacing “Association” on their plates and buttons.
30     Georgian Officer’s 1796-1830 Universal Pattern gorget.
A fine example comprising a rich fire gilt on copper example, the rim of the crescent formed over a wire frame. The centre part engraved with Crowned GR Cypher within a wreath of laurels. GC (£300 - £400)
In May 1796 new regulations were issued abolishing silver gorgets and introducing the Universal pattern in gilt bearing the Royal Cypher. The gorget was abolished by William IV in August 1830 but permitted to be worn by Officers at home up to Christmas 1831 and up to 1832 by those abroad.
31     3rd Birmingham Loyal Volunteers Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1803-15.
An extremely fine and very rare gilt on copper die-stamped oval example with raised designs comprising a Crowned strap ‘Loyal Birmingham Volunteers”, centrally “3” upon a dimpled ground. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising single hook at the top and two studs at the bottom. VGC (£700 - £900)
Three battalions under the nominal Colonelcy of George Legge, Earl of Dartmouth. Conversion to Local Militia was not necessary for the big three Birmingham Corps.
32     Fifth or South Western Regiment Jersey Militia Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1790-1820.
A very fine and rare example. Copper gilt oval plate engraved with the Crown over a shield bearing the three lions, a title strap ‘Fifth or South West Regiment Jersey Militia, all within a decorated incised edge. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising single hook at the top and two studs at the bottom. VGC. (£700 - £900)
33     Georgian Officer’s 1800-12 “stovepipe” shako plate.
A fine and rare die-stamped gilt on copper example, officially designated the ‘trophy plate’ and showing the basic design of the Crown, Garter Proper with “GR” centre, upon a background of trophies, colours, muskets, trumpets and swords at the base the Lion Statant Guardant of England. Four small holes for attachment to the shako. VGC (£800 - £1,000)
34     Bellaghy Infantry (Co Londonderry) OR’s shoulder belt plate circa 1798-1807.
A rare example, the oval brass plate with simple engraving being a Crowned strap “Bellaghy Infy”, “GR’ in the centre. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising single hook at the top (now absent) and two studs at the bottom. GC (£300 - £500)
A single company corps commanded in 1803 by Capt. John Spotswood.
35     Mounts Bay Volunteers Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1796-1801 and/or 1803-08. (Cornwall).
A very fine and rare gilt on copper oval example. The cast back plate with a raised and beaded rim, the inner reserve with a dimpled ground and mounts in silver and gilt. An eight pointed silver star with raised gilt inner ring, centrally the script initials “MBV” in silver. The mounts pinned through. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising single hook at the top and two studs at the bottom. VGC (£600 - £800)
Though always listed as “Mountsbay” an extant plate of the Yeoman Rangers shows “Mounts Bay”. The 1803 raising comprised two large battalions.
36     New Forest (Duke of Gloucester’s) Battalion of Volunteer Infantry Officer’s shoulder belt plate.
A superb and most rare die-stamped copper on gilt example. The rectangular plate with clipped corners and with raised designs, comprising, the central crest of a Royal Duke over “V”, with enclosing strap “H.R.H. Duke of Gloucesters N. Forest Battallion Infantry”. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising two hooks at the top and two studs at the bottom. VGC (£800 - £1,000)
Raised 1803 under the command of Lt-Col. Commandant William Champney Crespigny. The unit did not convert to Local Militia in 1808. This Duke of Gloucester was a KG and Field Marshal. The second Duke of this creation was a grandson of Prince Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales, eldest son of George II.
37     Notts Militia Officer’s shoulder belt plate circa 1790-1813.
An extremely fine and rare cast gilt on copper example. The oval back plate with a raised and beaded rim, the dimpled reserve overlaid with an eight pointed silver star; this with a pierced strap “”Notts Militia” and central “GR”. Black patent leather backing to the strap and centre. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising two hooks at the top and two studs at the bottom. VGC (£800 - £1,000)
This pattern succeeded the “Cap of Liberty” plate circa 1778-1790. The title “Royal Sherwood Foresters’ was bestowed in 1814.

51     14th (Buckinghamshire) Regiment OR’s Albert shako plate circa 1844-55.

54     104th Bengal Fusiliers pre 1881 Officer’s fur cap grenade.
A very fine and exceedingly scarce example. Gilt flaming grenade, the ball mounted with gilt laurel wreath with silver “BF” cypher to centre. The base of the wreath bears a tri-part scroll inscribed “Punjaub Chillianwallah Goojerat” with bi-part scroll above “Pegu Delhi”. Two screw posts to reverse. VGC (£400 - £600)

The all Officer Army Veterinary Department was amalgamated with the OR’s of the Army Veterinary Corps in March 1906. The title “Royal” was bestowed on the Corps in 1918 in recognition of its outstanding service in the Great War.

There were various attempts c1890-1912 to restore the shako to all line infantry regiments. Trial patterns for officers and other ranks were made up for approximately six regiments.

A rectangular die-stamped brass plate, the raised designs comprising motto and title scrolls with central Crown over the Maid of Erin Harp and attendant Union sprays, at the base the Sphinx/Egypt. The reverse with the correct four broad tangs (one repaired). Considerable surface wear particularly to the scrolls and Egypt plinth. The plate later ‘gilt dipped’ (£100 - £150)
This pattern of plate has been heavily reproduced in recent years. Here, albeit worn is a genuine example.

A very fine and scarce example worn on the Albert shako. Rich gilt eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown, the principal rays of the star bearing the regiment’s honours. Mounted on the star, a laurel wreath bearing the honours Toulouse, Maida and Peninsula; within the wreath, a circlet inscribed “East Devonshire”; seeded XX to centre on a burnished gilt ground. Above the wreath, a scroll inscribed “Minden”; beneath the wreath, a gilt Sphinx resting on a tablet inscribed “Egypt”. From 1842 to 1853 the 20th served in Gibraltar, Bermuda and North America. In 1854 it was attached to and landed with the Fourth or Cathcart’s Division in the Crimea. It was engaged at the Alma, Inkerman and throughout the Siege of Sebastopol including the assaults on 18th June and 8th September 1855. It was the only regiment to march into Sevastopol with band playing and colours flying.

A good rare example. Copper gilt oval plate with engraved design comprising the Crowned Maid of Erin Harp, 1796 and the unit title on furled scrolls. The reverse with two hooks (one missing) and two studs. Traces of gilt only. (£400 - £600)

A fine and rare example. The copper gilt Crowned star backplate with silver ‘hobnail’ pattern inlays to the arms of the cross, centrally in silver “XIII” within a strap “Viret In Aeternum”, on the edges of the cross “Light Dragoons” and the honours “Inkerman Sevastopol Balaklava Waterloo Peninsula Alma”. The reverse with two loop fasteners and double wires behind the Crown.; the retaining wires behind the central backing disc missing now secured with glue, otherwise VGC. (£600 - £800)
The Regiment converted to Hussars in 1861.

A very fine and scarce silvered example. Eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star, a circlet inscribed “Royal Meath Militia”; shamrock mounted on the domed centre. Reverse retains both original horizontal loops. VGC (£500 - £600)
Royal Meath Militia raised in 1793 at Kells. In 1874 HQ moved to Navan. Became 5th Battalion Leinster Regiment on Friday 1st July 1881.
