927     21st (Empress of Indias) Lancers Victorian lance cap. A scarce ORs example. Patent leather body, peak and crown with ornate gilt metal fleur bosses to each corner. Regimental lance plate to front with the Battle Honour Khartoum. Lions head bosses support brass and cloth-backed chin chain. Woollen cord boss and plume absent. Leather and waxed cotton lining to the interior. Some age wear with moth damage to the front grey blue cloth panel. (£300 - £500) Converted from Hussars to 21st Lancers on 31st March 1897. | 928     3rd Middlesex or Royal Westminster Militia Officers Helmet. A rare pre 1901 example of an Officer's Home Service Pattern green cloth helmet. The helmet is complete with silvered metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses supporting a black velvet backed chin chain. To the front, an eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; on the star a circlet inscribed 3rd or Royal Westminster Middlesex. To the centre, a shield of Westminster and Middlesex Arms with strung bugle above. Also bearing the Battle Honour Mediterranean. The interior with a Leather sweatband. The front peak is rounded indicating an early example of the type. The helmet plate remains in good condition, the body of the helmet with some moth damage and discolouring. GC. (£400 - £600) Raised at Brentford 1797; became 3rd Bn. Royal Fusiliers on Friday 1st July 1881. |

| 930     Seaforth Highlanders attributed Great War pattern foreign service helmet & equipment. These items were carried by Regimental Sergeant Major John Mackenzie. Comprising: A clean example of the Other Ranks foreign service Wolseley pattern helmet with 11 fold pagri. Complete with leather sweatband and chinstrap. The interior with ink name and rank of Colour Sergeant. Remains in good condition, leather sweatband a little dry ... accompanied by a Sam Browne belt with single brace strap. ... .455 Webley holster bearing gold tooled name RSM John Mackenzie Seaforth Highdes. | 931     Montgomeryshire Imperial Yeomanry Troopers helmet. A good, scarce example, modelled on the 1871 pattern helmet. Nickel skull mounted with acanthus leaf decoration, the front bearing an eight pointed backing star; mounted on the star a strap inscribed Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry; Welsh dragon to centre. Two rose head pattern bosses support the interlinked leather backed chin chain. The crown bears a spike that supports the white horsehair plume with gilt metal rose pattern boss. The interior retains leather lining. Minor wear and dents, leather dry. GC. (£600 - £700) This pattern was introduced to the regiment in 1882, the white horsehair plume followed 1896. |
| 932     Victorian Hampshire Carabiniers Troopers helmet. A good example of the 1871 pattern helmet with nickel skull mounted with acanthus leaf decoration above the front peak. To the front, an eight pointed backing star mounted with a Crowned oval brass strap inscribed Hampshire Carabiniers; to the centre, a brass rose on a black patent leather ground. Two rose head bosses support the leather backed chin chain (stitching faults). The crown bears a plain fluted spike that supports the white horsehair plume with white metal rose head boss. The interior retains leather lining. Near VGC. (£500 - £700) Various Hampshire troops of Yeomanry raised from 1794 which were regimented in 1830 and designated North Hampshire Yeomanry Cavalry the following year. Converted to Hussars in 1841 and reorganised as Hampshire Yeomanry Cavalry (Carabiniers) in 1887 whilst under the command of Lt.Col. Hon Henry George Louis Crichton (late Major 21st Hussars). |
| 933     Royal Horse Guards Troopers helmet. A good post 1901 example. Burnished silvered skull surmounted by a brass eight pointed star plate from which emerges a silvered plume holder supporting a scarlet horsehair plume with silvered button pattern boss. To the front, a helmet plate comprising a wreath, half of laurel half of oak, surrounding the Collar of the Order of the Garter and surmounted by an Edward Crown. Mounted to centre is the Star of the Order of the Garter. To each side of the skull, a gilded rose head boss supports the leather backed brass chin chain. Complete with its original leather lining. | 934     Merryweather pattern brass fireman's helmet. Brass skull surmounted by floral ornamented brass comb. To the front a shield bearing the Universal pattern fire device. Complete with both brass rose head bosses supporting a leather backed graduated chin scales. Complete with original leather lining. The helmet retains a good shape but has with two splits to the neck peak, and some damage to the front of the comb. GC (£220 - £260) |
| 935     17th (Duke of Cambridges Own) Lancers Victorian lance cap. A scarce example of the ORs lance cap. Patent leather body and peak. The crown is of white coloured leather. Regimental pre 1901 lance plate to front with the last Battle Honour South Africa 1879. Lions head bosses support brass and leather-backed chin chain. Woollen cord boss with skull and crossbones regimental button to centre supports a white horsehair plume mounted in brass plume holder. Leather and cotton lining to the interior, with issue stamp 1903. GC (£700 - £800) |
| 936     Hertfordshire Yeomanry 1869-1880 Officers spiked helmet. A rare example of the metal pattern helmet introduced to the Regiment in 1869. Silvered skull mounted with gilt acanthus leaf decoration. To the front, a gilt Crowned shield mounted with a silvered Hart. Two rose head bosses support an interlinked velvet backed chin chain. The crown with a gilt fluted spike. The interior retains original quilted silk lining. Slight age wear to the lining, a good clean example. (£1,500 - £1,750) The helmet was introduced to the Regiment in about 1869. Originally worn with the spike until 1880 when it was superseded by a horsehair plume. |
| 937     4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards Troopers helmet. A good 1871 example. Brass skull decorated with brass laurel leaves; to the front a white metal Garter Star with brass title strap and white 4 to the centre. Brass spike supports a white regimental pattern horsehair plume with rose boss. To each side are rose head bosses which support a brass leather-backed chin chain (not correct pattern). Leather lining to the interior. Minor service wear otherwise, thread to spike damaged. GC (£500 - £600) |
| 938     31st Bengal Native Infantry Field Officers shako. A very fine and scarce 1855-61 example complete with white linen cover for hot climate. Black beaver skin with black patent leather crown, neck and front peaks; two rows of gold lace around top of the crown denote Colonels or Lieutenant Colonels rank. To the front a fine fire eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star, a laurel wreath encircling a strap inscribed Bengal Native Infantry; 31 to centre on a burnished gilt ground. Woollen white over red tuft to crown. The interior retains original leather sweatband with crimson silk edging and waxed silk lining. Black patent leather chinstrap and blackened mask to reverse of shako on the top line of gold lace. To the inside of the crown, an original paper tailors label of Garden and Son, Army Cap and Helmet Makers of 200 Piccadilly, London. The shako is accompanied by its original white linen Foreign Service Cover with 3-button fastenings to each side; the linen now stained and with minor holes and tears. Shako and cover are housed in japanned carrying tin. Shako VGC (£2,250 - £2,500) The vendor states that this shako was worn by Lt. Gen. Frederick George Lister. Born 1790, died 1870. Originally commissioned as ensign into the 26th Native Infantry in 1806. Lt. 1808. Capt. 1824. Maj. 1839. Lt. Col. 1845. Col. 1855. Maj. Gen. 1857. Lt. Gen 1869. Posted as Colonel to the 31st Bengal Native Infantry in 1855. |

A good and scarce example of the dark green cloth Home Service Pattern helmet complete with blackened metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses. The bosses support a blackened interlinked chinchain with leather backing. To the front, a Crowned Maltese cross plate with lions between the arms; to the centre, a Crowned strung bugle within a circlet inscribed 1st AB Gloucestershire R.V. A good example of the 1878 pattern blue cloth helmet complete with gilt metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses supporting a velvet backed chin chain (stitching faults). To the front, gilt Royal Arms with tri-part scroll below inscribed Quo fas et gloria ducunt with additional scroll above inscribed Ubique (crude conversation to Kings Crown). Crimson silk topped leather sweatband to the interior. GC. Contained in original metal storage tin, fitted with brass name plate C.W. Bushell Royal Artillery. ... Accompanied by a second storage tin, to house two foreign service helmets, with painted name Col C.W. Bushell. ... Officers Sam Browne belt with brace strap. ... Pair of Spurs. ... Sergeants Mess Soup plate with transfer 66 RFA (damaged). ... Pair of RN rank boards. ... and a pair of Sergeants stripes. Serving with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force during the Great War he was awarded the OBE and MID on three occasions. |

A post 1881 example of an Officers Home Service Pattern blue cloth helmet complete with gilt metal cross piece, spike and rose head bosses which support the chin chain. To the front, a gilt metal eight pointed star, the topmost point displaced by a Crown; mounted on the star the Garter within a laurel wreath; to the centre, a silver Sphinx resting on a tablet inscribed Egypt set on a black velvet ground (velvet poor condition). Mounted on the base of the wreath, a silver tri-part scroll, inscribed The Gloucestershire Regiment To the reverse, straddling the backstrap, the gilt metal Gloucestershire Regiment back badge (Sphinx resting on a tablet inscribed Egypt set within a laurel wreath). Complete with crimson silk topped leather sweatband (silk shot). The helmet has age wear with moth damage to the rear peak and discolouring to the edge. (£340 - £440) The regiment were accorded the unique honour of wearing a back badge in commemoration of the distinguished conduct of the 1st Bn. (then 28th Foot) when engaged both to the front and rear in the great Battle before Alexandria on 21st March 1801. This distinction was later confirmed by Horse Guards Order dated 11th May 1830. |
