Awarded to 5172930 Pte. N. Cosier. Comprising: 1914 Star, with clasp “1/Glouc R”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Defence Medal, Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (GVR Field Marshal Bust). The group is mounted as worn and accompanied by a swimming Prize Medal with engraved details for the 2nd Glosters August 1912. GC. (£180 - £220)

Awarded to “17423 Pte. C. Stevens Glouc R” Comprising: 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. GC. (£40 - £60)
It is believed that Private Stevens served with the 2nd Battalion and landed in France on the 2nd April 1915.
452     8th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment Gallipoli Casualty Group.
Awarded to “15281 Pte. F.T.Tidy Glouc R” Comprising: 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. GC. (£180 - £220)
Private Frederick Thomas Tidy, a native of Bristol, died on the 8th August 1915, whilst serving with the 8th Battalion. On this day at 4.15 am the 8th left their trenches to attack the Turks on Chunuk Bair Ridge. This day would prove disastrous for the Regiment, but their bravery and determination would be noted by the Commander in Chief himself. By the end of the day, of the 1,000 men of the Regiment only 180 would remain unwounded. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial

Attributed to Lieutenant D.J. Roberts of the 12th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment. Information supplied by the vendor indicates wounded at Ypres on the 27th August 1917. This is the only Officer of this name shown in the 1919 Army List.

461     2nd Bn 4th Foot 1877-79 South African Zulu War Medal, clasp “1879”.
A good example awarded to “1204 Pte. J. Edwards 2/4th Foot”. GC (£300 - £400)
Private James Edwards enlisted into the 4th Foot on the 4th January 1878. He embarked for South Africa in December of that year. He remained in South Africa until February 1880 when he was posted to India, returning home in 1884. He remained with the Regiment and was discharged in 1889. The medal and clasp are confirmed and his records show that this was his only medal entitlement.
462     1st Battalion 25th Foot 1878-80 Afghanistan War Medal
A late issue example. Awarded to “1007 Pte. J. McCourt 1/25th FT”. GC (£80 - £100)
Private John McCourt was born in West Meath and enlisted into the 25th Foot on the 28th August 1876 in India. He is confirmed as serving in the Afghan Campaign and was also part of the Chin Lushai expedition and was awarded the medal and clasp. He returned to England in 1891, being discharged in 1892.
463     Most Honourable Order of the Bath Victorian Knight Commander’s set.
A very fine Military Division KCB neck badge and breast star. The 18 ct. gold and enamel neck badge bearing London hallmarks for 1883. Gold rimmed, eight pointed white enamel cross, each point tipped with a gold ball and lions between the arms. Mounted on the cross, a green enamel laurel wreath enclosing a red enamel circlet inscribed “Tria juncta in uno”. Within the circlet, in gold, three crowns separated by a Union spray of Rose, Thistle and Shamrock set on a white enamel ground. Below the wreath, a scroll inscribed “Ich Dien” on a blue enamel ground. Suspended by an oakleaf ornamented ring.... together with its pierced silver breast star; mounted on the star, a pierced gilt circlet inscribed “Tria juncta in uno” on a translucent red enamel ground; within the circlet, three gilt Crowns ornamented with crimson enamel (enamel absent to one). Below the wreath, a scroll inscribed “Ich Dien” on a blue enamel ground. Stout pin to reverse. Minor chip to enamel on top arm of neck badge otherwise VGC (£2,000 - £2,500)

The “1893 - 94” clasp was awarded for operations against the Sofas between the 26th November 1893 and 20th January 1894. Only 50 men of the 1st West India Regiment were present.

471     80th (Stafford Volunteers) Foot 1854-95 India General Service Medal.
This example bearing the clasp “Bhootan”. Awarded to “307 R. White Hm’s 80th Regt”. GC. (£180 - £220)
Private Richard White enlisted into the 80th Foot in 1859. His medal and clasp entitlement is confirmed and he appears to have been discharged as medically unfit in 1879, whilst serving in the West Indies.
472     Royal Navy Male Nurse’s Falklands Medal Long Service Pair.
A scarce combination awarded to Nurse P Goddard, a nurse with the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service. Comprising: South Atlantic Medal with rosette “ALMA P. Goddard D139180H NP 1830” (official Correction to Rank), Royal Navy Long Service & Good Conduct Medal “LEN (G) P. Goddard Y003089P QARNNS”. (official correction to rank) Medals mounted as originally worn. GC. (£750 - £1,000)
Naval party 1830 was the medical contingent serving on the Hospital Ship Uganda. This party was under the command of Cmdr A B Gough RN and Surgeon Capt A J Rintoul RN Uganda arrived in the combat area on the 11th May and established a Red Cross box with her Argentine counterpart, receiving her first casualties the following day.
473     3rd Foot Guards two clasp 1793-1814 Military General Service Medal.
Awarded to Private Thomas Bridon who was a member of the Forlorn Hope at the storming of St Sebastian. The medal bearing two clasps “Vittoria”, “St Sebastian” “T.Bridon 3rd Foot Guards” GC some slight edge knocks. Accompanied by photocopy service papers. (£800 - £1,000)
The clasp entitlement to the Military General Service is confirmed. Private Thomas Bridon (spelt Brydon on service papers), enlisted on the 3rd October 1812 into the 3rd Foot Guards. He embarked to Portugal in 1813 and formed part of the Forlorn Hope at St Sebastian on the 31st August 1813. (only 42 clasp were awarded to the Regiment). He remained with the Regiment, being discharged because of ill health in 1834. Records show that this medal was sold 1901 at Glendinnings and formed part of the Elson Collection in 1963.

Sergeant William Seeley enlisted into the Scots Guards on the 7th March 1895 at the age of 23. He served in the UK until the 30th May 1917 when he embarked to France. Following the Great War he was discharged and is believed to have been awarded the Silver War Badge due to Flat Feet, aggravated by service. He was awarded the MSM on the 8th June 1949, by which time he was 77 years old
475     Scots Fusilier Guards DCM for a Victoria Cross action before Sebastopol.
Awarded to Sergeant Donald McBeath, who was one of the luckiest members of the Regiment and was part of the rescue party when Sergeant James Craig won the Victoria Cross. Comprising: Distinguished Conduct Medal “Serjt D. McBeath . Scots Fusr Gds”. Accompanied by a quantity of photocopy research, including a photograph of Sergeant McBeath, wearing his medals as a member of the Atholl Highlanders. (£3,000 - £3,500)
Donald McBeath was born in December 1830 and earned his living as a herdsman and ploughman. At the age of 18 he enlisted into the 93rd Highlanders, but appears to have been bought out by friends the following year. Returning to work on the land, the call of the Army must have entered his blood, because on the 5th December 1851 he once again enlisted, this time into the Scots Fusilier Guards. After two years service he was appointed Corporal in 1854 and with this rank he embarked for the Crimea with the original contingent. He was present at the Battles of Alma (the day after promoted to Sergeant), Balaklava and Inkerman. Following the last battle McBeath found 14 bullet holes in his uniform, but remained unscathed. Now in the Trenches before Sebastopol, he was selected to be the NCO in charge of the Regiment’s Sharpshooters, as one of the best shots. On the evening of the 6th September 1855 Captain Buckley had gone forward to check the sentries, Private Allen and Sankey. They came under fire and Captain Buckley was believed wounded. Sergeant Craig and Drummer Smith volunteered to go out and bring the wounded Officer in. Sergeant McBeath was in charge of the section and went out with the two volunteers to search. After a short time, unable to locate the Officer, Sergeant McBeath, separated to search and came across the wounded Private Sankey. Lifting him onto his back, he carried the man back to the British Lines. Again he had cheated death, his jacket was shot through, but he remained unscathed. Sergeant Craig brought Captain Buckley’s dead body back to the Lines and received the Victoria Cross. Sergeant McBeath received the DCM for this action of bravery. He returned to England and was discharged from the Scots Fusilier Guards on the 12th November 1856. He was given the appointment of Head Deer Stalker by the Duke of Atholl and enlisted into the Atholl Highlanders, being appointed Sergeant Major with charge of Arms, a rank he held until his death in 1911.

Awarded to Quarter Master Sergeant Thomas Murray, who volunteered for service with the Guards Camel Regiment during the Nile Expedition. Comprising: Egypt Medal (undated) two clasps “The Nile 1884-85”, “Abu Klea” “Sergt”, Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (Victoria) “3785 Q.M.Sgt Scots Gds”, Khedives’ Star, 1884-5” “2 SG 3785”. Medals loose, first medal with heavy contact wear and rubbing to edge. (£360 - £400)
Quarter Master Sergeant Thomas Murray enlisted on the 24th November 1876. His civilian occupation was given as Labourer and was born in Cawdor Nairn. Appointed a Lance Corporal in May 1878, he was a full Corporal five months later. With the rank of Sergeant, he embarked with the Regiment for Egypt in September 1884. He was one of 80 men of the Regiment who volunteered to serve with the Guards Camel Regiment and was present at the Battle of Abu Klea. He the Devishes charged and broke one face of the British Square, but the Guards on the further side, faced about and stood, holding back the screaming Dervishes. It is interesting to note that Sergeant Murray captured two Dervish knives that now reside in the Guards Museum. Returning to England in July 1885 he was discharged from the Regiment with the rank of Quarter Master on the 24th November 1897.
477     3rd Bn Scots Guards Tank Commander’s Normandy 1944 Casualty Group.
Awarded to Sergeant Edgar (Ecky) Thorne the only NCO Troop Commander of S Squadron 6th Guards Armoured Brigade. Comprising: General Service Medal, Clasp “Palestine” “2692032 GDSMN E. Thorne S.GDS”, 1939/45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal. medals loose GC. Accompanied by a large amount of research. (£300 - £400)
Sergeant Edgar (Ecky) Thorne was born on the 9th November 1911 and enlisted into the Scots Guards on the 19th April 1926. He saw service in Palestine during 1936. During the Second World War he volunteered for service with the Guards Armoured Division and was appointed a Tank Commander in S Squadron commanded by William Whitelaw who would later become the Deputy Prime Minster. At the time the Squadron embarked for North West Europe on the 20th July 1944 he had been appointed a Troop Commander, the only NCO of the Squadron to hold this position. On the 30th July 1944 the Squadrons Churchill Tanks moved forward towards Caumont. Four miles into German positions the Squadron’s objectives had been taken. However three of the new German Panther Tanks appeared, the Churchill Tanks being no match for their 88 mm guns. Within five minutes, 11 of the Squadron’s 16 Tanks had been knocked out, many bursting into flames. 21 men were killed with a further 18 wounded. Sergeant Thorne was Killed in Action on this day the 30th July 1944.
478     Scots Guards 1918 Distinguished Conduct Medal group.
Awarded to 14578 Corporal David McKay of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards. Comprising: Distinguished Conduct Medal “L.Cpl. 2/ S.GDS”, British War Medal, Victory Medal “Cpl S.GDS”. GC. (£1,500 - £2,000)
The citation for the DCM appeared in the London Gazette on the 28th March 1918 “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was in charge of a machine gun team in an attack on a strong enemy position. On the Company Officers and Senior NCO’s becoming casualties and the flank attack being held up, he fought his gun, although the rest of the team were casualties and did not retire with it into the line until all the wounded had been brought in. His precise description of the enemies defence proved very valuable and his courage and determination were most marked”. Corporal David McKay was born in 1891 and enlisted into the Scots Guards on the 1st November 1915. After training he landed in France on the 26th August 1916. He received gunshot wounds to the right leg on the 25th September 1916. He returned to the UK in June 1918 and was once again sent to France to see the last of the fighting during October and November 1918. He was discharged on the 15th March 1919.
479     Scots Guards unique Boer War casualty Queen’s South Africa Medal.
Awarded to 9449 Private James Steere who was the only Scots Guardsman Killed in Action at Slapkranz on the 28th July 1900. The Queen’s South Africa Medal (ghost dates) bears two clasps “Cape Colony” and “Wittebergen” GC. ... Accompanied by original Registered envelope and forwarding letter for the QSA. Plus original soldier’s parchment certificate issued on completion of Private Steere’s first engagement. (£500 - £600)
Private James Steere was born in Kidbrook, Eltham Kent in 1869. He enlisted into the Scots Guards on the 26th February 1892 and on the completion of his engagement was discharged in February 1895. At the outbreak of the Boer War he was recalled to the Colours on the 26th December 1899 and embarked for South Africa on the 15th March 1900. On the 28th July 1900 the Second Battalion Scots Guards formed part of the 8th Division that was moving on Slapkranz. The taking of which, would close the bottle neck on a basin, entrapping one of the Boer Armies. The Scots Guards along with the 1st Leinsters, under the command of Colonel Harley, formed the main body of the advance with the support of six artillery guns. They took a Kopje which outflanked the enemy positions. At midnight the attack was renewed by the Scots Guards and supporting troops and the Boer positions were taken. During the attack, three men were killed in action, Private Steere being the only one from the Scots Guards. On the 30th July, Martin Prinsloo, Commander of the Boers, surrendered his Army to the British.

482     WWII South African Air Force Pilot’s group of six.
Awarded to 174090 Lieutenant William Benjamin Turner. Comprising: 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, clasp “North Africa 1942-43”, Italy Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Africa Service Medal. Each medal is a South African issue and impressed with the details “174090 W.B. Turner”. Medals loose GC. ... Accompanied by a fine pair of WWII period SAAF bullion pilot’s wings, . (£80 - £120)
Lieutenant William Benjamin Turner enlisted into the South African Air Force in 1941, qualifying as a Pilot March 1942. He was posted to 15 Squadron SAAF operating Bisley Bombers and then transferred to 27 Squadron operating Ventura bomber aircraft. Both Squadrons seeing active service in North Africa. After being screened from Ops he converted to Dakota DC3 transport aircraft and saw the war out with this type, undertaking Transport duties.

Private William Richard Eveleigh Royal Marine Light Infantry is buried in New York City Cemetery. He joined the RMLI in August 1899, being re-engaged on the 10th August 1916. He was awarded the LS & GC Medal March 1915.

Major Reginald Chapman was born in July 1895. Enlisting into the Royal Engineers, he landed in France on the 4th May 1918 and remained here until the 11th November 1918 Remaining with the Corps, he was commissioned in 1937 and appointed Inspector of RE Machinery, a role he would continue through his military career. He was appointed Captain in 1942, Temporary Major in the same year. Remaining with the Army after the War he was substantiated Major in 1946 and retired from the Army in 1948

The vendor has supplied information that Private Edward Kearns was born in India and enlisted on the 1st October 1892. He served in India, Egypt, Malta and South Africa. He was invalided on the 31st May 1901 and discharged in May 1902.

Assistant Surgeon James Edward Porteous was born on the 6th January 1810. He served with C Troop of the Madras Horse Artillery during the China War and died on active service from Cholera on the 18th August 1849.

Mr Thomas Rubery Chambers is shown on the medal roll submitted from The General Hospital Pretoria and is headed “Civil Surgeons attached RAMC”. Mr Chambers was first registered as a Dentist in June 1896; he died in 1933.

Private Daniel Bulpitt enlisted on the 7th December 1853. He served in Trinidad and St. Lucia before embarking to China with the Regiment. His clasp entitlement is confirmed and his records show that he was discharged along with 30 other men at Tien Tsin on the 8th October 1861. He remained in Hong Kong until 1861.

He would return to the UK via Gibraltar in June 1887, being discharged in January 1893. His medal and clasp entitlement is confirmed.

The recommendation for the BEM “520100 Acting Flight Sergeant John Ainslie Summers 199 Squadron. This airman is a fitter IIE. He took over the duties of NCO in charge of “A” Flight, whilst he was very junior. Such was the power of his personality and example that every member of the Flight has worked to the utmost capacity for him. The Squadron has recently been re-equipped with Stirling aircraft and Flight Sergeant Summers performed outstanding services during these most harassing and difficult times when a new type of aircraft was being operated in bad weather. As a technician and leader of men Flight Sergeant Summers is outstanding.”

Sergeant Thomas West originally enlisted into the 16th Foot on the 3rd May 1839 and transferred to the 31st on the 1st November 1840. He remained with the Regiment until 1860, being promoted to Sergeant on the 12th October 1858.
546     Land Transport Train Officer’s 1869 Abyssinian Medal.

Lieutenant Colonel James Nisbet Steel was born in 1840. Passing the examination for the East India College at Addiscombe in 1859, he was granted a Commission and on arrival in India was attached to the 77th Foot. After studying Native Languages, in 1862 he was attached to the 92nd Highlanders and then the 13th Light Infantry, before being appointed Acting Station Interpreter at Berhampore in 1863. Serving as Quarter Master of the 25th Punjab Infantry, he is confirmed as serving with the Land Transport Train in the Abyssinia campaign 7th February to the 31st May 1868. After the campaign he returned to the 25th Punjab Native Infantry. Promoted to Captain in 1869 and a Wing Commander with the 25th in 1877. It was with this Regiment that he served through the 2nd Afghan War and is entitled to the medal and clasp. Promoted to Major in 1880 and Lt Col of the 25th in 1886. He retired in 1888 and died in the United Kingdom on the 27th January 1905.

548     Mantle Star of the Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick
A scarce Victorian example comprising a silver bullion star; to the centre a purple velvet circlet inscribed with the Order’s motto “Quis Separabit” and the year of its establishment “MDCCL III”; within the circlet, St.Patrick’s saltire in crimson velvet on a silver sequinned ground. To the centre of the saltire, a green velvet shamrock bearing three golden Crowns. Heavy wear and some stitching faults. (£100 - £200)
549     Ancient and Honourable Artillery Company 1896 medal.
A fine attractive silver gilt and enamel example by Smith, Patterson & Co. Boston, Mass. commemorating the 1896 visit to England. Gilt shield with raised crimson border charged with the figure of a pikeman; the shield rests in a white enamel five part scroll inscribed “Marlborough House, Windsor 1896 Finsbury, Aldershot”. Emerging from the top of the shield are a pair of pike heads and an armoured forearm clutch sword. The whole suspended from a pair of crossed cannon with enamel tablet “A & H. A. Co. 1638”. The reverse engraved “Presented by the London Committee of the A & H.A.C”. VGC Housed in its original silk lined case. (£80 - £120)
HRH Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) was Captain General of this Massachusetts Company which had been formed in 1638 by Robert Keayne, who had been trained with the HAC and emigrated to America in 1630. The HAC were to make a reciprocal visit however it was delayed until 1903 by the Boer War.
550     Royal Flying Corps Old Contemptables Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.
A George V (Field Marshal bust) example awarded to “957 SMJR. D. Patterson RFC”. Near VGC. PLEASE NOTE this example appears to be an official replacement medal, although not stamped with a “R”. The naming is of the smaller style and the medal has a fixed suspender. (£100 - £200)
No. 957 David Patterson had formerly served with the Grenadier Guards and transferred to the RFC in August 1913. The following month he qualified as a Pilot gaining the Aero Certificate 677. He served with 5 Squadron France in 1914 and in 1915 he was appointed a Warrant Officer and was awarded the LSGC Medal in March 1915. He would continue service in the RAF following the end of the War and was listed as the 73rd Senior Warrant Officer in the RAF 1941. He would see out most of the war as an Officer in the RAFVR with the rank of Flight Lieutenant. His full medal entitlement is OBE, 1914 Star, with clasp, BWM, VM, MID, 1939/45 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Army LS&GC Medal, Army MSM, Belgian Croix de Guerre. His full medal group is known to be now resting in a private collection.

Captain Hobbs enlisted as an Other Rank in 1892. In 1901 he was posted to India, remaining there until 1905. He remained in the UK until commissioned as a Quarter Master and embarked to France in October 1918 to join the 14th Bn the Welch Regiment. He saw action with the Battalion in the last days of the war. He remained overseas until 1920, now serving with the 5th Bn Welch Regiment. He remained with the Regiment and retired with the rank of Captain in 1934. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he once again volunteered to serve King and Country and was appointed Quartermaster of the 22nd Bn Cardiff Home Guard. a post he held until his death in 1943.

Private John Martin was born in Dublin and enlisted into the 84th Foot at Cork on the 26th September 1851. age 19. His papers show his only medal entitlement was the two clasp Indian Mutiny. On his discharge at the termination of his second period of engagement on the 7th November 1874, his conduct was given as good, despite 23 entries into the Defaulters book and one Court Marshal for disgraceful conduct.

He is confirmed as serving onboard the sloop HMS Swallow, which was under the command of Commander L.Dod Sampson during the Witu expedition (56 medals to the ship, with only 220 medals issued to seaman). Transferring to the RFR in 1905 he served during the Great War earning a 1914/15 Trio and being Mentioned in Despatches.

Lieutenant Arthur Christopher Vidal Gosset was born in 1893 and served 3 years with the Malborough OTC and the the Cambridge University OTC, before receiving a Commission into his county regiment the Ox & Bucks. He landed in France on the 22nd July 1915 and was wounded on the 9th July 1916, being evacuated to England. He rejoined his Battalion a few days later on the 17th September. He was again wounded receiving gun shot wounds to the right shoulder and neck on the 17th September 1916, being evacuated again to England on the 14th October 1916, he then received an Honorable discharge and was awarded the Silver War Badge.

No Officer of this name appears on the Roll of Honor of the Commonwealth War Graves and only one Officer appears in the 1918 Army List. The citation for the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 16th September 1918. “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This Officer personally reconnoitered under heavy machine gun fire the whole front of the Battalion which had been ordered to advance at short notice without having had an opportunity of examining the ground beforehand. When the flank was threatened the reserve Company of which he was in command was pushed into the gap and he made able dispositions of his Platoons and Stokes and Vickers Guns. Under heavy fire he crawled forward and secured maps and papers from wounded and dead enemy in front of our lines. Later when fifty of the enemy endeavored to rush one of his posts, he turned a Lewis Gun on them and accounted for them all. He was severely wounded, losing an eye while doing this, but he didi not desist until the enemy was completely repulsed. His gallantry and initiative were conspicuous throughout the day during the whole of which he was under close machine gun fire” Appointed a Lieutenant on the 11th January 1918. Petty Officer George Thomas Sells enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy in November 1889. After various postings he had his first taste of service on the Royal Yacht for one month during 1890. A year later he received a permanent posting to the Yacht being promoted to AB Rigger in July 1893 and attaining the rank of Petty Officer in July 1903. In 1908 he was posted to HMS Alexandra and in 1910 joined the RNR at Portsmouth. He was recalled to HMS Victory in August 1914 and was discharged in February 1919.

Surgeon Probationer John James Rouse Binnie, at the outbreak of the Great War was studying to be a Surgeon at Edinburgh University. In April 1916 he broke from his studies and enlisted into the RNVR and joined the Destroyer HMS Ossory, which was present at the Battle of Jutland. He appears to have been released in 1917 to return to his studies and in 1919 gained an MB and Ch.B. Information supplied by the vendor.

Raised as the Dutoitspan Hussars in June 1876 under the command of Captain Loftus Rollason; became Diamond Fields Horse in November 1877 under Major Maxwell and served with distinction in numerous campaigns. Cecil Rhodes held an honorary commission in the regiment. The regiment was engaged at Gobatse Heights where several of their number were killed in action.

He was discharged at the end of his second engagement at Wicklow in May 1888. His service papers show that the Long Service medal awarded in April 1886 is his sole entitlemen.

The recommendation for the Military Cross. “For exceptional gallantry, determination and devotion to duty during the advance from Favril to Avesnes on the 7th November 1918 while commanding a section of Armored cars. During the whole day his cars were constantly engaging enemy in closely intersected country along roads that were full of obstacles and were being blown up in numerous places by the enemy. His skill and determination in overcoming all difficulties were a fine example to his men”. Captain May was commanding two Armored Cars attached to the 32nd Division and on the 7th November were heavily engaged by the enemy at one point coming under trench mortar fire. Captain May is confirmed as serving in the ranks of the 15th Battalion London Regiment, landing in France on the 17th March 1915. Selected for Officer Training he was commissioned into the Machine Gun Corps in September 1915. The 17th Battalion was formed in March 1918 as a Tank Battalion and was converted to Armored Cars in April 1918. The publication British Battles and Medals by Major Gordon indicates only 8 clasps were awarded to the Royal Engineers. Corporal Launder returned to the UK on the 19th July 1870 and in 1882 was awarded the LS & GC Medal. He was discharged in April 1885 after serving 21 years with the Colours.

Colonel Richard Parry Burnett, a Civil Engineer by trade, volunteered for Military service at the outbreak of the Great War on the 5th August 1914 and was selected for a commission into the 8th Bn South Staffordshire Regiment raised at Lichfield. He was appointed a Captain in May 1915 and seems to have been a member of the Battalion’s advance party, landing in France on the 16th July 1915. Appointed Major in July 1916, he was wounded in the right foot in the same month. He was once again wounded in May 1917, this time in the arm and head. In November 1916 he was appointed Lt Col Commanding the 8th. In April 1918 he was attached to the 7th Bn Royal Fusiliers as Commanding Officer of the Battalion. He remained with the 7th until its return to England in May 1919. He then applied for a permanent Commission and this was granted in January 1921 to the Yorks & Lancs Regiment. During the interwar years he served at Home and India and only regained his Great War rank of Lt Col on his retirement from the Army in December 1938. At the outbreak of the Second World War he rejoined the Regiment and in 1941 was commanding the 11th Battalion. He transferred from the 11th in November 1942 to be appointed Temporary Colonel. The last entry on the records is for March 1943.

The citation for the Military Cross “22nd August 1917” “For gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy trenches N.E. of Monchy on the evening of the 9th August 1917. This Officer led his party to their objective Arrow Trench, which they occupied and held, When parties on his right and left who had failed to reach their objectives, withdrew he continued to hold Arrow Trench after the hour named for withdrawing, until satisfied that both parties had been safely withdrawn. During the entire period he crawled up and down his line under heavy fire to control and direct the fire of his party and when he decided to withdraw he again did the same to ensure that every man should get the order personally. After seeing every man into our front line trench, this Officer again returned to No Man’s Land under heavy machine gun and rifle fire to superintend the search for wounded and their removable”. Captain V.F. de W.W. Vredenburg was appointed Captain on the 26th August 1917 and the 1918 Army list shows him still serving with the Second Battalion.

Private Thomas Mc Fadden London Gazette entry for the MM appeared on the 18th October 1940. The Black Watch was heavily engaged during the German Attacks of May and June of 1940, before the fall back to Dunkirk.

699     Royal Air Force Pilot’s Casualty group.
Awarded to Flight Lieutenant John Douglas Cantrell, who was killed in a flying accident on the 21st February 1946. Comprising: 1939/45 Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal (Medals loose), Official condolence forwarding slip. ... Accompanied by a large quantity of research. (£50 - £75)
Flight Lieutenant John Douglas Cantrell, joined the RAF on the 15th October 1943 and was selected for Pilot Training, being transferred to Canada. Returning to the UK he was posted to 115 Squadron operating Lancaster Bombers and flew on 10 operations before the end of the war. The first to Dortmund on the 26th February 1945. He also flew on a number of Food dropping operations over Holland and then flying back POW’s from Germany. After a short spell in Italy he was undertaking an Air Test of a Lancaster on the 21st February 1946, when at 11.30 hours an explosion was heard and the Lancaster was seen to disintegrate in mid air and fall in flames. Flt Lt Cantrell was 23 years old.

Private John McDonald a brick layer by trade enlisted on the 6th June 1879. He embarked to Egypt on the 13th August 1882 from Malta and before his discharge in February 1891 saw service in East India. His papers show that he was awarded the Egypt Medal and 1883 Star. (Latter missing)

Assistant Surgeon Isaac was born in 1908; appointed to the IMD in December 1935. He was shown in July 1939 as a Surgeon 4th Class.

Lieutenant Senior Surgeon E.S. Baillie was born in September 1861 and was appointed a Assistant Apothecary in the ISMD in April 1891 and a 1st Class Assistant Surgeon in February 1904. He was commissioned in 1908. He was the son of a Sergeant serving with the Lahore Light Horse. He passed away on the 10th September 1917 after suffering a heart attack, aged 56.

Brigadier John Montgomerie Sinclaire was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for operations in Italy while Commanding the 64th Field Regiment. He had previously been Mentioned in Despatches for operations in Persia/ Iraq. Recommendation for the award of the DSO “Lt Col Sinclair has commanded 64th Field Regiment RA since Sept 1944, with conspicuous success, having taken command during the battle under very difficult circumstances. During the entire period, when his Regiment was in support of 24 Guards Brigade he did magnificent work carrying out many reconnaissance with boldness and thoroughness which displayed a complete disregard of danger, and making excellent fire plans wwhich materially assisted the success of these operations.
