He would also serve as Extra Equerry to King Edward VII. He was a cousin of Field Marshal Earl Haig. In 18 he inherited the Bemersyde estate and became the Laird. In 1921, he decided to sell the estate. Funds were raised by public subscription and the estate was purchased and presented to his cousin, Field Marshal Earl Haig, in recognition of his services in the great War. The Wilkinson Sword register confirms the purchaser of the sword (no 13613) as HRH Prince Alfred (1844-1900). At the time of the gift, Alfred was serving in the Royal Navy as a Lieutenant aboard HMS Racoon under the command of Count Gleichen. In 1866 he was promoted Captain in command of HMS Galatea just prior to being created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Kent and Earl of Ulster on .24th May. The following year he set sail, in command of HMS Galatea, for an around the world voyage and became the first member of the Royal Family to visit Australia. Here he was enthusiastically greeted by all except one, a James Henry OFarrell, who on 12th March 1868 at Sydney, cowardly shot the Prince in the back. He survived and after awhile continued his journey. He succeeded to the title Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1893 and moved there to rule. Tragically in 1899, his only son Alfred, shot himself during his parents 25th wedding anniversary celebrations. The following year, Prince Alfred himself died from throat cancer on 30th July 1900. |
