470     An important pair of epaulettes circa 1758 attributed to the 42nd Highlanders.
An extremely fine and excessively rare pair believed worn by Ensign McIntosh of the Light Company. Each of buff cloth edged with embroidered silver wire line, the lower section swells and forms an oval section embroidered with chain border, each link ornamented with a sequin. The chain continues above the oval to form a border around the upper section. Within the oval, the letters “LI” in silver embroidery edged in brown silk; the letters resting in an open wreath. Leading up from the oval, down the centre of the strap, a line of silvered embroidery with sequins terminating in a plain silver bone back button, The lower section of each oval retains silver bullion tassels. Close examination reveals each epaulette has been embroidered by a the hand of a different laceman as was usual practice. Several sequins absent otherwise extremely fine. (£1,000 - £2,000)
These epaulettes came in the same Officer’s effects as the 1777 Commission to Captain John McIntosh in the following lot. John McIntosh was appointed an Ensign in the 42nd Highlanders at the age of 14. On 3rd July, 1758, whilst the regiment was in America, HM King George II conferred the title of “Royal” on the regiment and in consequence the facings changed from buff to blue. A few days later, on 22nd July, the regiment was distinguished by its “extraordinary gallantry” in the desperate but unsuccessful attack on Ticonderoga. From 1868, the buttons of the British Army were engraved with the regimental number.
471     An American War of Independence 1777 British Commission for the 42nd Highlanders.
This commission is appointing John McIntosh to be a Captain in His Majesty’s 42nd Royal of Highlanders. Hand written to paper and issued on the command of His Excellency Sir William Howe Commander in Chief of all His Majesty’s Forces within the colonies laying on the Atlantic ocean from Nova Scotia to West Florida. Sealed at the Head Quarters, German Town 5th October 1777. Bears his ink signature to the lower right corner. Complete with seal to the top left. A little age wear, writing is clear. (£400 - £600)
John McIntosh was appointed an Ensign in the 42nd Highlanders at the age of 14. He was appointed the Adjutant of the 1st Bn in March 1772 and received his Captaincy in October 1777. He was wounded in Action at the Battle of Harlem Heights on the 16th September 1776 and it was here that the 42nd Highlanders and the 33rd Foot engaged the American Northern Rangers and Virginia Militia. During the war, the 42nd Highlanders were heavily engaged against the American Forces. He retired from the Army on the 18th February 1780.
472     King’s Royal Rifle Corps Victorian Officer’s pouch belt.
A fine example of three inch black patent leather. Silver furniture, lion’s head on circular pierced “Celer et audax” boss (by B & P hallmarked Birmingham 1886), three strand chain secured by the lion’s mouth terminates in a silver whistle with holder (hallmarked). Plate of Maltese cross design surmounted by a Victorian Crown resting on a tablet inscribed “Celer et audax”. To the centre, within a title circlet, a strung bugle . The arms of the cross each bear five battle honours (last being “Tel-el-Kebir”). Complete with black patent leather covered pouch, the face bearing silver strung bugle. Patent with usual age crazing otherwise near VGC. (£300 - £400)
473     Royal Horse Guard’s crupper from an Officer’s charger.
A fine example of black bridle leather with brass scallop edged buckles. Applied cental ornament in the form of a Crowned scallop edged Garter mounted with cut steel centre. Minor service wear. Generally VGC (£75 - £100)
474     Italian Air Force Officer’s sword belt and another.
A fine white kid lined grey cloth example with two lines of gold lace, complete with slings and ornate gilt hanger of three rectangular tablets linked together. Gilt clasp by SAFS, Napoli comprising Crowned laurel wreath with eagle to centre, ornate ropework ends. Generally VGC ... together with a rather worn and dull Czechoslovakian Officer’s belt with Lion and linden leaf ornamented clasp Stitching faults and heavy service wear. (2 items) (£50 - £100)
475     London Scottish Volunteers Victorian Officer’s pouch and belt.
A good two and a quarter inch brown leather pouch belt ornamented with crisscross stiching. Matching leather pouch bearing silver plated Crowned thistle wreath; to the centre, within a strap inscribed “London Scottish Volunteers”, a rampant lion. TVGC ... together with a brown leather sword knot. GC (2 items) (£50 - £100)

A fine and scarce example by R & HB Kirkwood, 66 & 68 Thistle St. Edinburgh. Gilt cantle with raised thistle border St Andrew and Cross to the centre. White goats hair body with five gold bullion twist wire tassels. Red leather backing and pocket to reverse. Bullion a little dull. GC (£400 - £500)
477     Gordon Highlanders OR’s sporran
Nickel edged black leather cantel bearing regimental shield device. White goat’s hair with two black goat’s hair tassels emerging from nickel bells suspended by chains. Reverse with leather backing and wallet impressed with maker’s details McFarlane of Kingussie. GC (£40 - £60)

Silver plate edged black leather cantel bearing silvered strap “Bydand” with crest of the Marquis of Huntley, viz. a stag’s head rising from a ducal coronet. White goat’s hair with three black goat’s hair tassels emerging from nickel bells suspended by chains. Reverse with leather backing and wallet impressed with maker’s details McFarlane of Kingussie. Age wear and stitching faults (£40 - £60)
483     Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry Victorian Officer’s silver mounted pouch and belt.
A good scarce example bearing by B & P (Bent and Parker) with Birmingham hallmarks for 1899. The flap is mounted with a gilt Crowned VR Cypher; the edge of the flap bears deep engraved decoration of regimental pattern. The box is of black leather with two gold bullion lines and is complete with both floriated ends and silver hallmarked belt loops. White buckskin belt with silver buckle, tip and slide with ensuite hallmarks. VGC (£250 - £350)

The Leopard Skin is complete with a scarlet cloth edging and retaining leather straps. Slight service and storage wear, with two bald patches, due to use. GC (£150 - £250)

This example is attributed to Captain Frank Lewis De Sales Terriere and is one of a number of items attributed to this Officer that can be found in this sale. A very good example, dark blue cloth edged with gold bullion lace of regimental pattern. To the front quarters an embroidered entwined VR cypher surmounted by a Guelphic style crown. To the swallow tails a bullion regimental device incorporating crossed flags and title “15 H”. Retaining cotton and leather backing. Very little age wear, bullion remains bright and fresh. (£600 - £1,000)
487     15th King’s Hussars Officer’s Sabretache and Waist belt.
This example is attributed to Captain Frank Lewis De Sales Terriere and is one of a number of items attributed to this Officer that can be found in this sale. A good pre 1901 example, the face of a scarlet melton cloth ground, with a bullion embroidered regimental device incorporating battle honours. Edged with one and a half inch lace. Retaining leather wallet and brass D rings. Complete with Cover ... Accompanied by bullion waist belt. Gold lace with central silk line. This lace repeated to the sabretache slings. The waist belt clasp is of fire gilt comprising: Two lion head masks and “S” shape clasp. GC Bullion remains bright. (£750 - £1,000)
488     15th King’s Own Hussars Officer’s pouch and belt.
This example is attributed to Captain Frank Lewis De Sales Terriere and is one of a number of items attributed to this Officer that can be found in this sale. A good pre 1901 example. Scarlet melton flap with applied bullion laurel wreath, trophy of arms, Royal Crest and Battle Honours. Heavy bullion line around the edge. Complete with red Morocco leather covered pocket and fire gilt belt loops. The belt is of scarlet cloth overlaid with gold bullion lace of regimental pattern and retains ornate fire gilt buckle tip and slide. Overall GC Bullion slightly dulled. Accompanied by leather and velvet cover. (£300 - £500)

490     2nd Madras Infantry Victorian Officer’s waist belt and clasp.
A fine red Morocco backed gold lace example with crimson silk line to the centre; matching sword slings. Complete with gilt clasp, the circlet inscribed “Madras Infantry”; applied silver “2” to seeded centre. Plugged holes provides evidence of former Crown and numerals. Some stitching faults, generally GC. (£150 - £250)
Provenance. In the effects of Captain Charles Colin Campbell, born 1842, who served in the regiment from 1867 until promoted Major 13th April, 1885 upon his transfer to 23rd Wallajahbad Light Infantry and also served in the Madras Staff Corps. See Lot 594 for his medals and 892 for his uniforms.

Ground of crimson damask silk with gold and silver embroidery depicting the Royal Arms to centre flanked by two winged angels and the whole encircled by floral inlaid bullion, the Crown flanked by “E” and “R”. To each corner is a bullion Union device incorporating the Rose of England, the Thistle of Scotland the Shamrock of Ireland. The banner is edged with fine gold twisted thread fringe. A fine and extremely rare post 1953 example. Black horse hair mounted into a gilt metal boss. The boss is mounted with four devices of the Order of the Garter. Each with blue and red enamel decoration. Surmounted by a crown, with crimson velvet cushion. Complete with polished black leather strap. Minor service wear VGC. (£100 - £200)

496     Royal Artillery Victorian Officer’s sabretache.
A good example, the black cloth face edged with gold lace, the centre with embossed, heavily embroidered bullion Royal Arms, with “Ubique” scroll beneath, resting in a demi-wreath of laurel and oak; below the wreath, a gilt gun with mounted wheel resting on a padded tri-part crimson velvet scroll inscribed “Quo fas et gloria ducunt”. Complete with three “D” shaped suspension rings. Complete with leather wallet to the reverse. Bullion remains bright, little age wear. (£200 - £300)
497     Officer’s white patent leather baldric.
A good three inch wide example with provision for shoulder belt plate and fitting for sword. Minor wear, leather remains very supple. GC (£80 - £120)
498     Hyderabad Contingent Lancers Victorian Officer’s pouch.
A fine and scarce late 19th century example. The silver plated flap is edged with deep palm leaf engraving. Mounted to the centre, gilt Crowned HCL cypher superimposed on a brace of crossed lances; the box is of black grained leather with two gold bullion lines and is complete with both floriated ends and plain belt loops. Minor service wear, fixing tongue and stud AF. GC (£200 - £300)
499     53rd Bengal Native Infantry 1830 pattern Officer’s shoulder scales.
A good scarce pair. Each comprising a dark blue melton scale bearing a large rich fire gilt crescent and edged with three quarter inch gold lace and retains gilt regimental button (“53” within strap “Regiment” resting in wreath). Lace dull, cloth melton lining absent to reverse of one, within one crescent a section of cloth replaced, (£150 - £200)
500     Parachute Brigade Commander’s staff car pennant.
A fine and scarce blue double sided example finely embroidered with large size parachute qualification wings with WW2 characteristic line running through the feathers. Swivel fitted onto a pole, the base with fittings to mount on the bonnet. Finial locally made from an OR’s cap badge. Generally VGC (£50 - £100)
