812     Life Guards Victorian Officers Helmet. The skull of German silver decorated with gilt brass laurel and oak leaf design. Gilt rose pattern ear bosses support a gilt brass red leather backed chin chain. To the front, helmet plate of half laurel/half oak leaf wreath surrounding the Collar of the Order of the Garter and surmounted by a Crown. Mounted to centre is a cut silver star of the Order of the Garter. The gilt pierced Garter is set onto blue enamelled ground, to the centre, the Cross of St. George in red enamel. To top of the helmet a gilt and silver spike rises from an eight pointed star and supports the white yak hair plume. The interior with leather sweatband, this with crimson material edging. VGC. The helmet has had sympathetic restoration to bring this to exhibition standard. Lining old replacement. (£1,500 - £2,000) |

To the base of the Star a tri-part pierced title scroll Kings Dragoon Guards. Gilt rose pattern ear bosses support velvet backed, chin chain. The interior retains original cotton lining. | 816     5th Dragoon Guards Officers post 1871 helmet. A magnificent and scarce example of the 1871 pattern helmet worn by an Officer of the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Waless) Dragoon Guards. Fire gilt skull decorated with laurel leaves; to the front a helmet plate of silvered cut star overlaid with a fire gilt title strap inscribed P.C.W. Dragoon Guards encircling a silvered numeral 5 set on a gilt ground. A gilt fluted spike supports the white over red regimental pattern horsehair plume with its gilt rose boss. To each side, a rose head boss which supports the gilt and red leather backed interlocking chin chain. Cotton lining to the interior. The lining is part shot. Overall VGC Gilt bright. | 817     5th Royal Irish Lancers mid 19th Century Officers lance cap. A fine and rare example, bearing the 1861 to 1870 lance plate. The skull of black patent leather with the upper portion of red melton cloth, with gold gimp cord across the top and down the angles. To the left side is a gold bullion rosette with embroidered Royal Cypher onto a green velvet ground. This supports a plume cup (possible replacement) and green cockerel feather plume. The fluted gilt plate bears Royal Arms, shamrock sprays, Maid of Erin Harp and scroll Fifth Royal Irish Lancers. Patent leather peak with gold bullion lines. Two gilt metal lions head bosses support chin chain with velvet backing. Leather sweatband to the interior, silk lining absent. Near VGC ... Accompanied by an associated storage tin. Fire gilt helmet plate overlaid with silver cut star with the castle of Inniskilling encircled by strap Inniskilling Dragoons to centre. German silver skull, the plume holder of gilt metal, this supporting a white horsehair plume. Two gilt rose bosses support gilt chin chain with leather backing (possible replacement). | 819     Lothians and Berwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry Victorian Officers helmet. A good scarce example of the 1871 pattern helmet. Silvered skull decorated with brass thistles; to the front a helmet plate comprising a Crowned Garter within a thistle wreath; to the centre, the Order of the Thistle Star with central VR Cypher; all resting on thistle spray bearing four part title scroll. Gilt spike supports a white regimental pattern horsehair plume with rose boss. To each side, a brass rose head boss supports a velvet backed brass chin chain. (possible replacement) The interior with leather lining with crimson silk edging. Overall GC gilt dulled. | 820     Queens Own Glasgow Yeomanry 1847 pattern Officers helmet. A scarce example of the 1847 (Albert) pattern worn by the regiment from 1848. Silvered skull decorated with gilt floral leaf design. The helmet plate comprises a wreath of Scottish thistles; within the wreath scrolling shield decoration surmounted by a Crown. A Thistle star is mounted with a gilt metal strap inscribed Nemo Me Impune Lacesset. Within the strap to the centre a rampant lion. Rose head bosses support a gilt chin chain with leather backing (replacement). The plume holder of leaf design supports a black flowing cockerel feather plume. The interior is fitted with a replacement lining. Some restoration overall GC. (£1,000 - £1,500) This example was attributed by the vendor to have been worn by Captain G Campbell. |

Brass skull decorated to the front, with a helmet plate comprising a silvered backing star with brass motto strap Decus Et Tutamen and to the centre, the County crest of three seaxes surmounted by a Kings Crown. Below the plate, a silvered scroll inscribed Essex Yeomanry. A brass spike supports the scarlet regimental pattern horsehair plume with rose boss. To the front, the regimental device of a large gilt metal flaming grenade with blue enamel decoration. The interior retains crimson silk topped leather sweatband and crimson silk lining bearing tailors stamp of Wells & Co. of Norwich. A good and rare example of the dark green cloth Home Service Pattern helmet complete with blackened metal cross piece, spike and rose bosses. The bosses support a blackened gimp interlinked chinchain with velvet backing. To the front, a crowned Maltese cross plate with lions between the arms; to the centre, the strung bugle. To the arms of the cross the title Dorset Rifle Volrs. Retains crimson silk topped leather sweatband to the interior. Also with ink name Lewis H.T. Chave, E Coy. Dark blue melton cloth body and crown with black patent leather peak; two bands silver lace to top of the crown indicating the rank of Major, quarter inch row around the base. To the front, a silvered shako plate bearing the title strap Leicestershire Militia. Half scarlet and white wool ball tuft, fitted into a VR cypher mounted boss. Complete with velvet backed silvered chin chain supported by silvered rose pattern bosses and at the rear by a lions mask. | 826     Zulu War period Officers Foreign Service helmet. A rare late 19th century example by A & T.A. Thompson, London SW, typical of the shape associated with these campaigns. A six panel whitened body with leather binding and 11 fold linen pagri. The interior with green cotton to the front and rear peaks. Complete with white calf leather sweatband with crimson cotton edging secured to the interior by undulating green band. Complete with white leather backed chinchain, white over red feather plume and oval 14th Hussars ORs cap badge to the front. Post war paper name label of Colin C.W. Thompson together with black painted carrying tin bearing post war white painted Colonel C.W. Thompson 14th Hussars. Generally VGC. | 827     Austria. 5th Uhlans Officers lance cap circa 1910. A splendid example with black patent leather skull and peak, red cloth covered top crossed with bullion lines; two bands of gold lace between the top and the skull. Gilt Crowned double headed eagle to the front with shield on its breast inscribed 5. On either side at the front, a gilt lions mask secures a gilt chain that tethers the end of the black horsehair plume that is surmounted by a bullion boss. On either side, gilt bars reach down from the top to encircle the gilt lions mask ear bosses which support the acanthus leaf gilt chin scales. Simulated leather sweatband and cream silk ling. VGC ... together with an associated Austrian Officers red leather pouch and belt. The pouch covered in silver plate edged with gilt, the face mounted with gilt Austrian eagle, the ends embossed with trophies of war; narrow crimson leather backed pouch belt of silver lace with central silk line. GC (2 items). All housed in a tall brass carrying tin with applied 5th Ulan gilt lance cap plate to the front. The lid with oval brass plate J. Menhart 5 Ulanen Regt. Landwehr.. Black japanned skull with gilt metal turned edge; the sides adorned with applied gilt laurel sprays. To the front, a flutted gilt semi-circular rayed plate mounted with Royal Arms and arching scroll 2nd or The Queens Dragoon Guards. Mounted on the the crown of the skull, a gilt edged black japanned comb supports the massive replacement black bearskin crest. To each side, a gilt lions mask supports the velvet backed ornate acanthus leaf chin scales. Dry leather liner detached but present. An impressive display item. (£2,000 - £3,000) |

To the centrem the Tower of London in silver, on a rich blue translucent enamel ground.. Replacement green woollen ball tuft, cup absent. To the front, a 1902-04 regimental helmet plate. Mounted with title scrolls The Derbyshire Regt and Sherwood Rangers. To the centre a silver Stag set on a field of blue enamel. Crofton-Atkins The Nottinghamshire Derbyshire Regiment. Tin with a little age wear GC. (£400 - £600) Brigadier General Cyril Randall Crofton-Atkins CBE was first commissioned into the Regiment in 1887. He was appointed Major in October 1915 and at the outbreak of the Great War was Lt Col with the Second Battalion. Appointed Temporary Brigadier General in 1916. Prior to the Great War he had seen service in Sierra Leone and South Africa. He retired from the army in 1920. |

The interior is also with a paper label with ink name Roberts 3/Worc. Housed in original metal storage tin, retaining brass name plate F.C. Roberts Esq The Worcestershire Regt. He was first commissioned 1911 and was appointed Captain in 1915, During the Great war he was wounded on three occasions and earned the DSO in 1915. Light grey cloth, complete with a gilt metal cross piece, spike and Scottish style bosses. The bosses support a gilt interlinked velvet backed chin chain. To the front, a gilt helmet plate of a Thistle Star, with 9 within a plain strap. The sweatband is now absent to the interior. Retains a good shape, gilt dulled. (£180 - £220) |

| 866     Inspector of Army Schools Edwardian Officers helmet. A very fine and scarce example circa 1901-10. Dark blue cloth with gilt metal cross piece, spike, rose head bosses and velvet backed chinchain. To the front, a gilt metal univeral plate; to the centre, a silver EVIIR on a blue enamel ground. Leather sweatband with silk edging. Contemporary paper label Army Schools. The overall condition is near very good, all gilt matches. Evidence of previous plate, possibly a Victorian example changed whilst the Officer was in service. (£500 - £700) Inspectors of Army Schools and Corps of Army Schoolmasters (formed in 1846;) disbanded 1920 and reformed as the Army Educational Corps 15th June, 1920. |

| 872     Montgomeryshire Imperial Yeomanry ORs helmet. A good, scarce example, modelled on the 1871 pattern helmet. Nickel skull mounted with an eight pointed backing star; the strap inscribed Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry; Welsh dragon to centre. Two rose head pattern bosses support the interlinked chin chain, with later backing. The crown bears a spike that supports the white horsehair plume. The interior retains leather lining. Minor wear , leather dry. GC. (£500 - £600) This pattern was introduced to the regiment in 1882, the white horsehair plume followed 1896. |

The white metal skull is surmounted by a brass eight pointed plate from which emerges a white metal plume holder, supporting a scarlet horse hair plume, with ornate horsehair boss.
