The letter is accompanied by a typed transcript. .. Also a number of family photographs and family tree. GC. (£40 - £60) The letter describes taking up a position on a small hill overlooking the German Trenches awaiting the explosion of the mine Then we had to walk a mile to take up our positions, mine being the crest of a small steep hill, a very obvious mark for artillery and I knew I was in for it He certainly was following the mine explosion he describes firing into the German line and having to stop only when his gun was hit by shrapnel. Withdrawing to the British Line surviving the first day. A second attack was scheduled for the following day, once he climbed to his exposed to position and again opened fire only to be subjected to a personal German barrage, knocking his gun out of action I lay in a perfect blue funk for over an hour while they hurled shell after shell into the blessed hill. After a Gas attack Farrington received orders to pull his men out of the line. The letter ends Yet all this action will hardly count as things go, being only a front of about 500 or 600 yards. Ive only been home a few hours so the above is a first hand report on my part of the show. Lt Col Farrington was originally commissioned into the South Lancashire Regiment and was attached to the Motor Machine Gun Section, by the end of the war he was a Lt acting Lt Col. |
