| The following 18 lots comprise The Hugh King Archive of Field Marshal The Viscount Montgomery of Alamein KG.
As many of you will know, Hugh King was a hairdresser by trade with his salon in Farnham. It was here that he became acquainted with the Field Marshal whilst cutting his hair. A friendship developed and Hugh became a regular visitor to Montys home at Islington Mill, Alton and was privileged to see many of the trophies amassed during his military career. In March 1976, Montys health was failing and he became confined to bed, so Hugh motored to Islington Mill to cut the Field Marshals hair one last time; a few days later the hero of Alamein passed away. 750     Signed Photograph of Field Marshal, The Viscount Montgomery This black and white photograph shows the Field Marshal, 3/4 length wearing flying jacket and black beret sporting both the bullion badge of a Field Marshal and that of the Royal Tank Regiment. | 753     Field Marshal, The Viscount Montgomerys car pennant. This printed cotton Union Flag pennant retains fixing rod. Accompanied by a typed note May 1971 This Standard was given to Mr H.L. King of Farnham ,Surrey by Field Marshal Lord Montgomery of Hindhead and Alamein K.G. This is typed on a piece of the Field Marshals home paper Isington Mill Alton Hampshire. | 754     Field Marshal The Viscount Montgomery Montys Black Beret. This beret was worn by the Field Marshal. Black Royal Tank Regiment private purchase beret retaining original regimental cap badge (stamped to the reverse J.R. Gaunt London and with a P ). The interior with cotton lining and Cashs tape style name label B.L. Montgomery. Good condition with service wear. (£2,000 - £3,000) To command the Battle of Alemein in October 1942, Monty joined the crew of a Grant tank and was given the Sergeant commanders black RTR beret which he promptly donned. He wore this beret to Tunis when he got a new one (possibly the lot being offered). Sometime after the Battle, the RTR badge was joined by his Generals badge and his iconic double-badged beret was born. For the rest of his military career he continued to sport a black beret. The original beret given to him by the Sergeant was donated to the Tank Museum in September 1945 where it is still on display. |

| 759     Field Marshal The Viscount Montgomery Sam Browne Belt. This is a regulation pattern polished brown leather Sam Browne belt with single brace strap. The interior bears five ink signatures. A note of authenticity accompanies the belt dated 21st April 1995 and signed by Hugh King. Belt remains in good supple condition. (£300 - £500) The letter of authenticity reads: This Sam Browne belt, worn by F.M. Montgomery of Alamein KG was given to me some years ago by his chauffeur. If the inside is examined you will discern the traces of some signatures. It was Montys custom to have his young liaison Officers, or Intelligence & situation gatherers, sign his and each others belts in this fashion. The authority for this was Colonel Peter B. Earle, one of those Officers. |

A restricted publication that was printed in Germany November 1945. 151 pages with a large number fold out maps charts and illustrations including details of the D-Day landings. This copy was personally presented to Hugh King by a Brigadier who served on Montys Staff and has written details to the front. Leather covers with gilt tooled letters. | 767     Field Marshal The Viscount Montgomery. Comb used in his last haircut. This black plastic comb, housed in a hairdressers chrome and glass upright vessel, was a cherished memento to Hugh King who was the Field Marshals hairdresser. In March 1976, the Field Marshal was gravely ill in bed so Hugh kindly travelled to cut his hair hair one last time and used this comb; Monty passed away a few days later. Hugh proudly showed this to many of those who visited him over the years. (£80 - £120) |
| 768     Masonic Dagger. A good scarce late 19th / early 20th century example, the 13 1/4 inch double edged steel blade with double fuller. Wire bound black grip, usual crossguard with lower one of bones; skull pommel. Complete with original black leather scabbard with nickel mounts (staple securing the chape absent). Two loose rings support the chain suspenders and belt clip, the latter bearing double compass motive. Some staining to blade. GC (18 1/2 inches overall) (£120 - £150) |
| 769     1938 rifle butt cribbage board presented from Royal Scots Fusiliers to KSLI. A most unusual item comprising a wooden rifle butt with two inlaid copper rows to hold the pegs, applied Royal Scots Fusiliers device and inlaid decoration of cartridge case ends. Brass match box style holder on the top inscribed Presented by the WOs and Sgts 1st Bn The Royal Scots Fusiliers to the WOs and Sgts 1st Bn The Kings Shropshire Light Infantry on their leaving India. | 774     108th (Madras Infantry) Regiment Officers Mess china plate circa 1873-81. This fine quality 9 inch example was produced by the Minton Factory and retailed through Pellatt & Wood, 25, Baker St. London W. Rich deep blue border with gilt floral outer edge and inside narrow gilt line. To the centre is a regimental device, surmounted by an Imperial Crown. The reverse with a Minton factory mark. Minor wear, generally GC. (£100 - £120) The Minton stamp would indicate that this plate was made between 1873 and 1891. 108th became 2nd Bn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on Friday 1st July, 1881 whilst under the command of Lt.Col. Henry Lock (Hon. Major General). |

Each of the three parts are decorated with a brown transfer of a Victorian Crown surmounting a Dragon. Also with green and gilt line decoration. | 781     An Impressive Great War Desk Ornament Ships Gun Turret from the Helgoland This copper model of ships gun turret opens to reveal two compartments and cast into the metal lid Cast from metal Ex-Surrendered German Battleship Helgoland Thos W Ward Ltd Sheffield 1922. Remains in good condition. Overall Length 8 inches. (£100 - £150) The Helgoland was a Helgoland Class Battleship she was completed in 1911 and saw action at the Battle of Jutland receiving one hit. She survived the war only to be taken by the British at the end of the War to replace those that had been scuttled at Scappa Flow |
| 782     Victorian Troopship Euphrates Ships Boat Crest. This lead cast example depicts the Star of India, with the ships name below. Shows evidence of once being painted, but now down to the base lead colour GC. Height 6 1/2 inches, Width 7 inches. (£100 - £200) The Troopship Euphrates was one of five rigged screw steam driven ships built in 1866 for the Indian Government they operated between Suez and Bombay before she was finally scraped in 1895. This badge is believed to have been mounted onto one of the ship boats. |
| 783     Boxer Rebellion Taku Forts Chinese Emperors standard. This is a magnificent and large rare example reputed to have been taken at Taku Forts by Midshipment Cecil B Shaw of HMS Goliath. This large flag depicts the Imperial Dragon having five claws to each foot (reserved for the Emperor, lesser rotals and nobility were indicated by four claws or less), he is depicted with horns looking towards a red sun. The flag is with pink cotton tube for attachment to a pole. GC Flown condition very few moth holes. Length approx. 15 Feet. Bearing an old ink written cotton label attached to the flag stating Taken from the Taku Forts North China June 1900 by Midshipman Cecil B Shaw HMS Goliath China Station. (£500 - £800) Commander Cecil Bartlett Shaw CB Greek War Cross, was appointed a Midshipman in June 1899. He is confirmed as serviving onboard HMS Goliath a 16 gun twin screw Battleship, based at the China Station, during the Rebellion. The Commonweatlth War Graves Roll show Commander Shaw CB as died on the 12th January 1946 at the age of 62 holding the rank of Commander Royal Navy. |

| 785     Winston Churchill Cigar Tribute to HMS Ajax & Exeter Battle of the River Plate Interest A rare Churchill cigar box, polished camphor wood, the lid is impressed Churchill Specials and to the front is a dramatic picture of Sir Winston holding a Tommy Gun and smoking a cigar and again Churchill Special. Good Condition (£40 - £60) The Churchill Specials were especially commissioned for the British Prime Minister. Following the return of HMS Ajax and Exeter in February 1940 the ships crews were invited to a Heroes Banquet at the Guild Hall London. The guest of honour was Sir Winston Churchill, who had instructed that each table would have a plentiful supply of Churchill Specials. |

Within a narrow oak leaf border The Saint Georges Challenge Shield 1863; inner border of laurel with ornade band with nine applied shields, eight bearing winners details, the first This Second Shield presented to The St. George Rifles by Messrs. Ortner & Houle, the first was finally won by Private Rowe 1870. To the centre St. George and the dragon, the latters head in high relief. Plating worn through to copper on highpoints. GC (£100 - £150) St. Georges Rifles (11th Middlesex RV) renumbered 6th Mx. RV in 1880 amalgamating with the 1st Mx RV in 1892 to become 1st Mx (Victoria & St. Georges Rifles) RVC. Amalgamated with 19th Mx RV in 1908 to become 9th London Regt. |
| 789     Good quality metal model of a WW2 British Anti-Aircraft gun. The gun is labelled as a 3.7 Anti Aircraft Gun Mk.1 and appears to be a one off example. The gun is mounted onto a carriage with rubber tyres (dry). The gun can be elevated by turning the correct handle, which is attached to a chain. The breach block can opened to give access to the shell slide. Retaining 95% of green painted finish, dusty. GC Length approximately 19 inches total. (£150 - £200) |

A most unusual set bearing silver hallmarks for Birmingham; each fashioned in the form of a Knights Bachelors neck badge viz. within a silver gilt oval border, a sword sheathed and belted between two spurs rowels upwards; set on a base plate. Crimson cloth insert to represent the red enamel; hoop behind the badge to hold place card. The circular holder is mounted with a disc of tortoiseshell, inlaid with a silver regimental device of the Rifle Brigade. The base is engraved M.B. Rifle Depot 1939-42 R.C.M.. | 819     3rd Bn South Wales Borderers Silver Mounted Blotting Folder. This is a fine quality example and probably used in the Officers Mess. Green leather tooled with a blind geometrical diamond design. To the front is mounted a silver shield finely engraved with a Kings Crown Regimental devise and title of the 3rd Battalion. To the corners silver mounts bearing Hallmarks for London 1903. The interior with two pockets and again with the same blind tooling. The leather retains is original colour, with a little service wear and remains supple and clean. GC (£180 - £220) |
| 820     Royal Navy Great War Period Ships Tampion. This is a rare example made of heavy white brass with rope edge. To the centre is a stylised Submarine or Torpedo flying a flag. Approx six inch diameter with two screw holes plugged. Retaining period painted finish. GC. (£200 - £300) This is believed to have been taken from a WW1 period motor gun boat. |
| 821     Barnsley War Memorial Model. This wooden model of the Cenotaph in Locke Park Barnsley is mounted with a bronze memorial plaque named to John Jackson The height of the memorial is 16 inches. GC. Accompanied by a letter dated 1981 stating that the memorial was made by John Jacksons brother in law, a Mr Albert Wood of Cudworth, in about 1920. It also states that the memorial was repaired in 1979 following a burglary. (£120 - £150) |
| 822     4th Kings African Rifles silver Officers Mess table lighter. A most attractive example comprising a strung bugle horn suspended from a crown; Arabic numeral 4 between the bugle cords. The wide end of the bugle would have the flame, the mouthpiece with detachable flame headed rod to dip in the metholated spirit in order to light ones cigar. Mounted on a circular stepped weighted base inscribed R.E. C-S 1st April 1920 on one side, H.A.L. on the other. Approx 14 cm high. (£180 - £220) Major R.E. Critchley Salmonson, Bt. MC Royal Fusiliers attached 4th KAR. No doubt the gift to the Mess upon his leaving the regiment. |
