| 773     4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards Officers 1871 pattern helmet. A superb example worn by Major General Robert Hutchinson CB DSO. The Gilded skull surmounted by a crosspiece base and four inch high plume socket supporting a white horsehair plume with gilt rose boss. Skull ornamented with a laurel wreath above the front peak and an oak leaf band rising from the edge of the neck piece and terminating under the crosspiece at the top. To the front a cut silver eight pointed star of the Most Illustrious Order of St.Patrick mounted with pierced gilt motto on a light blue enamel ground. To the voided centre, St.Patricks cross in red enamel on a lined silver field. To the centre of the cross a green enamelled shamrock with three gilt, red enamelled crowns. Gilt rose pattern ear bosses support the black leather backed, plain burnished chain. Quilted silk lining to the interior. The gilt finish to the skull remains in near parade condition ... Housed in metal storage tin this with engraved name plate Major R. Hutchison 4th Dragoon Guards. (£1,800 - £2,200) Robert Hutchinson was commissioned into the 7th Dragoon Guards in 1900. He served in South Africa with the Imperial Yeomanry and was appointed a Captain in the 11th Hussars and in 1913 with the rank of Major he transferred to the 4th Dragoon Guards. At the outbreak of the Great War he landed in France during September 1914. In 1916 he was for a short period serving in Ireland with the rank of Brigadier General. In 1918 was was appointed a CB and received the DSO in 1915 for distinguished service in the field. |
| 774     6th Inniskilling Dragoons Officers 1871 pattern helmet. A fine and rare example. Silvered skull surmounted by a gilt metal crosspiece and fluted spike supporting a white horsehair plume with gilt rose boss. Skull ornamented with a laurel wreath above the front peak and an oak leaf band rising from the edge of the neck piece and terminating under the crosspiece at the top. To the front a cut gilt star mounted with gilt oval Regimental title strap inscribed Inniskilling Dragoons; gilt VR Cypher to the centre. Gilt rose pattern ear bosses support the 1 inch wide, red leather backed, plain burnished chinchain. The interior now with the remains of the quilted silk lining. Gilt has toned to a copper colour. GC. (£1,500 - £2,000) This pattern of helmet was adopted by the Regiment in 1871 with a VR Cypher to the centre of the helmet plate. Within a short time the Regiment adopted a Regimental device of a Castle and number. |

A rare example of the dark green cloth Home Service Pattern helmet complete with blackened metal cross piece, spike and rose boss. To the front, a helmet plate of a Maltese cross surmounted by a Victorian Crown, lions between the arms; within a title strap inscribed 5th Weald of Kent Rifle Volunteers, to the centre The White Horse of Kent. Leather sweatband to interior. The helmet in good original condition, no evidence of another helmet plate having been worn. Small moth nips not effecting the appearance. (£250 - £400) |
| 778     Highland Light Infantry Edwardian Officers shako. A good quality example. Dark green body with diced band red-white-red and red-green-red. To the front, a regimental post 1902 shako badge and a cord boss is mounted with a blackened thistle device. Complete with plaited cap lines and green woollen ball tuft. The tuft boss is mounted with a EVIIR Cypher. Black patent leather peak. The interior is with leather sweatband and scarlet silk lining with tailors gold stamp for Memel & Co. Ink name to the interior of W.T. MacLellan. Overall condition is near VGC. Complete with shako lines and housed in a metal storage tin. (£400 - £500) |

Two gold lace bands one of quarter inch the other of half inch to top of the crown, one row around the base. To the front a fire gilt plate comprising a crowned laurel wreath bearing Garter; centre with pierced 38. White over red wool pom-pom supported by an ornate gilt holder with a VR Cypher mounted ball. Complete with velvet backed chin chain supported by gilt rose pattern bosses and at the rear by a gilt lions mask. The interior with leather sweatband and crimson silk lining. Gilt Royal Arms helmet plate of the Royal Army Medical Corps to the front. The interior retains leather sweatband and crimson silk edging. Slight wear. Nickel skull decorated with brass laurel leaves; to the front a helmet plate of a brass eight pointed star mounted with silvered strap inscribed Royal Berkshire Yeomanry Cavalry; gilt metal star and crescent from the Seal of the Borough of Hungerford to centre. To the crown is a Regimental pattern Albert foliage brass plume holder, which supports a red and white horsehair plume with rose boss. This indicating the wearer as a bandsman. | 790     Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry Officers Helmet circa 1860. A good and rare example of the pattern adopted by the regiment around 1860. Patent leather skull, peak and neck peak. To the crown of the helmet a silver plated cross piece this supports a silver plated flame finial, worn in undress (plume worn in full dress). Two lion head bosses support a velvet backed interlinked chin chain. To the front a helmet plate comprising: a large silvered thistle wreath surmounted by a Crown; within the wreath, an applied gilt Garter, enclosing the Star of the Order of the Thistle in gilt. Below the Garter, among thistle sprays, four gilt scrolls inscribed Royal, Midlothian, Yeomanry, Cavalry. The interior retains the original leather sweatband. | 792     6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) Officers 1871 pattern helmet. A fine example worn by Lieutenant Colonel Hereward Sadler. Gilt metal skull decorated with laurel leaves; to the front a white metal Garter star bearing gilt metal strap The Carabiniers which encircles silvered Royal Crest. Fluted gilt spike supports a white regimental pattern horsehair plume with gilt metal rose boss. Brass rose head boss to either side support the brass leather-backed chin chain. The interior with a cotton lining. VGC. Both the helmet and plume are housed in separate metal storage tins. The helmet tin with a brass name plate engraved Capt Hereward Sadler 6th Dragoon Guards (£1,500 - £2,000) Lieutenant Colonel Hereward Sadler had served in the ranks of the Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War before he was granted a commission into the 6th DG. He was promoted to Captain in 1910 and at the outbreak of the war embarked for France gaining the 1914 Star. He was appointed Lt Col in 1919. |
| 793     Montgomeryshire Imperial Yeomanry ORs helmet. A good, scarce example, modelled on the 1871 pattern helmet. Nickel skull mounted with an eight pointed backing star; the strap inscribed Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry; Welsh dragon to centre. Two rose head pattern bosses support the interlinked chin chain, with later backing. The crown bears a spike that supports the white horsehair plume. The interior retains leather lining. Minor wear, number of small dents to skull. GC. (£400 - £600) This pattern was introduced to the regiment in 1882, the white horsehair plume followed 1896. |
| 794     Leinster Regiment Victorian Officers forage cap. A good scarce example by Webb & Bonella, London of dark blue melton cloth with scarlet band. Patent leather peak with 3/4 inch gold embroidery. Black corded button and braided figure ornament the crown; the welt with gold French braid indicating the Officer is of Field Rank. To the front, a finely detailed silvered Prince of Waless plumes mounted with gilt coronet and scrolls inscribed Ich Dien. Below these scrolls, a further straight gilt scroll inscribed The Leinster. Padded crimson silk lining complete with sweatband (partially detached). Several small moth holes generally not affecting appearance. GC (£600 - £650) |
| 795     21st (Empress of India) Lancers Officers lance cap. A fine and rare example of a turn of the century Officer's lance cap. The skull of black patent leather with the upper portion of French Grey melton cloth, with gold gimp cord across the top and down the angles. To the left side is a gold bullion rosette with embroidered regimental device of a VRI Cypher onto a velvet ground. This supports a gilt plume cup and replacement white stitched swans feather drooping plume. The gilt lance cap plate is mounted with silvered Kings Crown Royal Arms, battle honour Khartoum, regimental device and title scroll. Patent leather peak with gold bullion lines. Two gilt metal lion head bosss support chin chain with velvet backing. Leather sweat band and traces of crimson silk lining retaining embossed stamp for Hawkes & Co. London. Slight age wear, plate remains bright with congealing to the back of the skull, one o two very small moth holes and nips to the melton cloth. GC (£4,500 - £5,000) |

| 798     12th Prince of Wales Royal Lancers Field Officers Peaked Cap. A full dress example attributed to Major E.C. Fox MBE, who served in WW2 attached to the 27th Lancers. The cap of scarlet cloth, with blue piping to the welt of the crown and quarters. Complete with regimental Kings Crown silvered and gilt cap badge and a row of bullion to the peak. VGC. The sweatband with the ink name fox and housed in the original Herbert Johnson box, which is addressed to Major E.C. Fox. (£60 - £100) Major Fox had joined the Regiment in the ranks and at the outbreak of WWII was a Sergeant Major. He was instrumental, along with Colonel Ian Smith, in forming the 27th Lancers. In 1945 he was commissioned Quartermaster and saw service in Palestine and Malaya. |
| 799     Royal Dragoons WW2 grey beret. A good very scarce example. Grey woollen body with leather binding and black cotton lining bearing Cairo makers logo. Officers eagle pattern collar badge (JR Gaunt, London) to front. Minor service wear otherwise generally VGC. (£150 - £200) These were introduced by Colonel Heyworth early in 1940 after the Royal Dragoons had moved from Palestine to Egypt and converted to an armoured car regiment. They were paid for out of regimental funds and made by a Cairo tailor. Although popular with both HM King George VI who was C in C Royal Dragoons and with FM Montgomery, the War Office continued to voice its objections and by the end of the war it was replaced by the familiar black beret of the RAC |

To the side a painted device of a red S above Zone within a yellow wreath. with initials HG and LDV. Complete with a 1941 dated lining and elasticated chinstrap. Stencil clear. GC. | 805     WW1 Early example of the A Pattern Raw Edge Brodie Helmet worn by the Music hall Star Sir Harry Lauder This is a scarce example of the A pattern helmet retaining much of the light green painted finish. The shell bearing the stamp IKS 4. Retaining two piece leather chin strap with buckle and a private purchase style padded cotton skull cap lining. Overall GC a little age wear. The helmet is accompanied by a label with hand written note Steel Helmet worn by H.L. at Arras while being bombarded. It was a narrow shave I was nearly not writing these lines Also to the reverse Harry Lauder Collection. (£200 - £300) Sir Harry Lauder the great Scottish Music hall star, following the death of his son Captain John Lauder in France during December 1916, tried to enlist but was refused due to his age. Desperate to do his bit for the war effort, he approached the War Office and was granted permission to go to France and entertain the troops. With a piano strapped to the front of a military vehicle travelled up and down the front giving shows in base camps, hospitals and forward positions. This was his faithful tin hat. |

The example is painted white to the shell with three black circular bands and to the front HFG (Head Fire Guard 1st phase period). These initials are repeated on the shield which is also painted white. The interior of the helmet and shield are a matching blue, green paint finish. | 814     Royal Horse Guards Officers helmet An extremely fine post 1953 example. Skull of German silver decorated with gilt brass laurel and oak leaf design. Gilt rose pattern ear bosses support a gilt brass leather backed chin chain. To front, helmet plate of half laurel/half oak leaf wreath surrounding the collar of the Order of the Garter and surmounted by a Crown. Mounted to centre is a cut silver star of the Order of the Garter. The gilt pierced Garter is set onto blue enamelled ground, to the centre, the Cross of St. George in red enamel. To the top of the helmet a gilt and silver spike rises from an eight pointed star and supports the simulated scarlet yak hair plume. Plume is surmounted by a fine rose pattern gilt boss.
