(£2,000 - £25,000) The Recommendation for the Immediate award of the Military Medal States: On 8 Aug, 1944 during the attack on the Incontro Monastery 899659 by 2 Bn DCLI, Cpl James was ordered to enter the Monastery grounds from the West at approx 05.45 hrs. As soon as his section had climbed through the gap in the wall, the Germans from within the Monastery grounds opened with heavy small arms fire on to the section, and on to the gap, thus barring the entrance for the remainder of the Platoon. Cpl James attempted to get forward with his section, but was unable to do so. He therefore ordered his section, to dig in inside the walls. This section remained in position, under aimed M.G. fire, and at a later stage, under considerable shelling until 14.00 hrs when the Monastery finally fell. During this period Cpl James collected together some men of another platoon which had lost their Officer and NCOs. These men he pulled into his own section to replace casualties. By his courage leadership and control he managed to keep the section in its fire position inside the wall for nearly 8 hours, thus denying to the Germans a covered approach by which they could have launched a counter-attack on our one firm position. The recommendation is signed by H.R. Alexander C in C. The Incontro Monastery is situated on a hill 600 feet above Florence, in a dominating position, it was held by a determined force of German Panzer Grenadiers. It was a hard fought battle and thus gained a unique Battle Honour for the DCLI. The Regimental history states "It is not often in a major war that a battalion can claim a battle honour to which it alone is entitled, but the Second's attack and capture of the Incontro Monastery near Florence is one example." |

GC (£2,000 - £2,500) The recollections of Chaplain Tucker were published by his wife a year after his death in 1886 He entered the Navy on the 6th June 1836 fulfilling a life long desire and on the following day joined his first ship HMS Minden of 74 guns at Davenport. The ship had just finished a refit and was sailing to join the Lisbon Squadron. A gentle and cultured person life on a ship of the line was something of a shock to him, He discovered Sea Sickness and ailment which would remain with him throughout his service when bad weather was encountered, The closeness of life, the smells, the swearing of the ratings and the profane songs. He settled into the life onboard ship and soon gained the respect of the men on both upper and lower decks. At this time a phrase was developed which remained with him through out his service Go to Tucker he was known as great diplomat and settled many an argument peacefully. He did great work to ensure that the boys of the ship gained an education, and on arriving in Lisbon he helped to found an English school on the mainland. A sister ship at Lisbon HMS Hastings was without Chaplain and he shared his duties between ships. When HMS Minden was ordered home he decided to remain with the Squadron and transferred to HMS Hastings a 72 gun ship, that would see him through the action at Syria and gain him the NGS. Of the action he wrote The Almighty let loose his vengeance (on the Egyptians) through later had the grace to admit as he saw men hit, that his emotions on the occasion were of a very humiliating nature. The Captain of the Hastings often saw Tucker as interfering with the running of his ship, especially on the Sabbath, he found an ally in the Captain of HMS Revenge who openly encouraged his work. He quickly transferred to the ship. In 1844 he was appointed Chaplain to the Naval dockyard and Hospital at Malta. Returning to England in 1849 he was without a Naval appointment and spent time at a parish in Colchester and later served from 1850-52 in Canada. In 1853 he was once more given a Naval appointment now at the Naval Hospital Hasler, he would remain here for 13 years and it was during this time he was assisted by a Scripture Reader, he would become the first such post, which would lead to the establishment of Paynes Royal Naval Scripture Readers Society. Tucker worked with William Payne a former Naval Chaplain to establish the society. In 1865 with the Chaplain of the Fleet John Kellow Goldney, who was also Chaplain to Greenwich Hospital was nearing retirement an old phrase came to his lips Go to Tucker, thus William Guise Tucker was appointed Chaplain to the Fleet a position he would hold until 1872. Following his death on the 22nd May 1885 his wife published his letters Recollections of a Chaplain in the Royal Navy in 1886, extracts of the letters can also be found in the publication The Sea Chaplains. |

Flying Officer Smalley has been a member of this Squadron since August 1937 and sine the outbreak of the War has been engaged in every type of operation undertaken by the Squadron. He has always shown the greatest determination in reaching his objective and in pressing home attack. In two recent raids over enemy occupied territory in France and Belgium, in spite of severe enemy opposition, he brought his aircraft down to under 1,000 feet in order to locate the target, which he attacked with success. His aircraft has several times been damaged by enemy AA fire and on one occasion his rear gunner was wounded. His courage has always been of the very high order, and the example he has set is deserving of the greatest praise. Flt Lt Smalley first war operation took place on the 3rd September the first day of the war, when the Wellington Bombers of 9 Squadron were detailed to sweep the North Sea for enemy shipping. He would fly operations over Germany, Norway, France and Denmark, on the night of the 16th May 1940, after attacking Targets in the Rhur, his aircraft strayed off track and he was forced to ditch off the French coast, he and the rest of his crew returned to base and resumed operations on the 22nd May. Posted to the Photographic Reconnaissance Unit at Heston he flew his first op as a second pilot in a Hudson on the 15th September 1940, with an op to Calais and Dunkirk in a Spitfire on the 5th October 1940. However on the 8th October again in Spitfire he was task with a trip to Kiel, which he failed to return. Some months later The PRU CO received a letter from Smalley now a resident of Dulag Luft the German Interrogation centre. Sorry I couldnt finish the job, Sir Dont quite know what happened. Big Bang and fireworks. I just managed to get out, a bit battered but safe and sound and as happy as can be expected. Very good treatment, good quarters, food and company here. But of course Im worried about the anxious for all my friends back home and long for news and long to be back with you all again. My love to all the boys, Sir thank you for a very happy stay in your unit. Smalley finally finished in Stalag Luft 3 the camp from which the Great Escape was made. Here he made two attempts to qualify for repatriation on the ground of persecution Mania, declined the first time, he tried a second time and was repatriated in February 1945.
