| 798     Kings Own Royal Lancaster 1901-1908 Volunteer Battalion Officers Helmet. This example is attributed to Captain John Herdman Kean, who was killed with the 1/5 Bn in 1917. A scarce example of an 1878 Home Service Pattern blue cloth helmet by Hawkes of London complete with white metal cross piece, spike and rose head bosses which support a velvet backed chin chain . To the front, a silvered post 1901 helmet plate. Within a Garter strap an regimental device of a Lion on a scarlet field. the plate bearing a title scroll Royal Lancaster Regiment Retains leather sweatband, with crimson silk edging. The interior also with a paper order label with Kean 1 VB Lanc. VGC, some mottling to the interior only. (£400 - £600) The helmet is attributed to Captain John Herdman Kean who was appointed a Captain in 1902. At the outbreak of the Great War he was serving with the 5th Bn and was killed on the 1st December 1917 and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial. |
| 799     Shropshire Imperial Yeomanry Troopers helmet. A good 1871 pattern example with silvered skull this decorated with brass laurel leaves; to the front a helmet plate of brass backing plate surmounted by a Post 1902 Kings Crown, mounted with a silvered cut star with brass title strap Shropshire Imperial Yeomanry and three animal heads to the centre. Brass spike supports a white over red regimental pattern horsehair plume with rose boss. To each side are rose head bosses which support a brass leather-backed chin chain. Original leather lining to the interior. Minor service wear, stitching faults to chin chain, otherwise VGC. (£800 - £1,200) This pattern of helmet was introduced to the regiment in 1872. Imperial Yeomanry was added to the regimental title in 1901. |
| 800     Victorian 2nd West Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry Troopers Helmet. A rare example of the 1847 Albert pattern helmet. German silver skull, to the front a regimental helmet plate of a cut silver star, within a Crowned Rose leaf wreath. The star mounted with gilt title 2nd West Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry and to the centre a silver rose. The ornate plume holder supports a black horse hair plume. Complete with gilt chin chain with leather backing and to the interior a leather lining (later replacement). Overall Good condition, one or two minor dents. (£800 - £1,200) The 2nd West Yorkshire Yeomanry was raised in 1843 with its HQ in Halifax. The Regiment was disbanded in 1894 and went on to form the Fourth Squadron of the Yorkshire Dragoons |
| 801     6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) Troopers helmet. A good 1871 pattern example. Brass skull decorated with laurel leaves; to the front a white metal Garter star bearing gilt metal Garter which encircles the numeral 6 set on a black patent leather ground. Brass rose head boss to either side support the brass leather-backed chin chain and to the interior can be found a leather lining This helmet is fitted with the undress brass spike and is accommodated by a Somerset brass spike which supports a white regimental pattern horsehair plume with rose boss. | 802     North Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry Victorian Officers helmet. A fine and scarce example of the 1847 (Albert) pattern worn by the Regiment 1854-1901. Silvered skull decorated with gilt metal floral leaf design. Helmet plate comprises a wreath, half of laurel, half of oak; within the wreath an ornate shield surmounted by a Crown. On the shield, an eight pointed silvered hobnail star mounted with a brass strap inscribed The North Somerset. Entwined VR Cypher to centre. Rose head bosses support a brass chin chain with leather backing. The plume holder of leaf design supports a white flowing horsehair plume with a rose head boss. | 810     Austrian Officers shako. A fine pre 1916 Officers shako. Black melton cloth body, with patent leather crown and peak. The peak decorated with a row of bullion. To the front a gilt metal Imperial Austrian Eagle, which supports the centre section of the gilt metal chain which is also supported by two gilt lion head bosses. Gold lace band of regimental pattern. Complete with a bullion cockade; the black centre bearing a bullion embroidered F.J.I. cypher (Franz Josef I). The interior is with lining, leather sweatband and chinstrap. Minor service wear, generally VGC ... Accompanied by original black oilskin foul weather covers for the shako and cockade. Contained in an associated metal storage tin. (£200 - £300) The Emperor Franz Joseph, one of the longest reigning monarchs, ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1848 until his death in November 1916 when he was succeeded by the young Archduke Karl. Upon his succession, the FJI cyphers were changed to that of the new Emperor. |
| 811     Saxon 19th century Cavalry Officers helmet. A very fine and scarce example of black leather with front and back peaks bound in gilt metal. Rich gilt comb, ornamented each side with oakleaves and acorns in relief, supports the black fur crest. Gilt bar in the shape of an inverted V extend from the comb to the base of the skull to protect the wearer by deflecting sword cuts. To the front, a gilt metal eight pointed star mounted with Arms of Saxony in silver. Gilt lions head bosses support the graduated frosted gilt oakleaf chinscales which join at the front and are backed with leather. To the wearers left side above the ear boss, a silver roundel with green rings. Green silk topped soft leather liner (silk now grubby and shot in places) and matching silk label with gold blocked Saxon Arms and makers details of L.A. Soyffarth Hofgürt, Dresden Amalienstr. | 812     1st Midlothian Rifle Volunteers 1869-78 Officers Shako. A very fine and rare example, the body and crown of dark blue melton cloth, patent leather peak. Two bands of quarter inch silver lace around the crown and another row around the base of the body are connected by a single line either side and one down the reverse. Silvered plate of crowned laurel wreath bearing Garter, the seeded centre mounted with circular button inscribed 1st Midlothian Rifle Volunteers with Thistle star to centre bearing crown. Fitted with a red wool pom-pom supported by a plain silver plated ball holder. Complete with velvet backed silvered chin chain supported by silvered rose pattern bosses and at the rear by a silvered lions mask. Retains soft leather sweatband and crimson silk lining. | 813     Heavy Cavalry 1818-34 Roman pattern helmet. A good impressive example, the skull of black painted metal with gilt metal trim; the sides adorned with applied gilt metal laurel sprays. To the front, a fluted semicircular rayed plate mounted with smaller plate bearing Royal Arms set on Prince of Waless plumes. Mounted atop the skull, a gilt metal edged black metal comb supports the massive replacement black bearskin crest. To each side, a replacement gilt lions mask supports the graduated leather backed ornate acanthus leaf chin scales (lower sections each side absent). | 816     Great War issue British ORs foul weather cap cover A rare example of the cap cover issued to British troops. It is made of rubberised material and is of he Gor Blimey pattern with fold down neck flap and ties. Slight service wear. GC (£150 - £200) These covers were first intended to be used with the Gor Blimey pattern cap but were later used by troops with the 1917 pattern cap. | 847     North Irish Horse Officers Full Dress Head-dress. A very rare example of the his unique regimental pattern. Hardened dark green melton cloth skull, with a wide black patent leather brim and band to the skull. To the front a large silvered badge (Blade fitting), set onto a green and white rosette. Complete with green cockerel feather plume. The sweatband to the interior is now absent, but the tailors label of Hawkes remains with paper order label with name Russell. Also gold initials A.H.R.. Black patent leather chin strap present. Overall near VGC, although there are moth nips to the underside of the brim. (£2,000 - £3,000) Hon Arthur Hamilton-Russell, 4th son of the 7th Viscount Boyne. | 848     1915 Royal Engineers Officers 1st Pattern Brodie Helmet with Original Cloth Cover. A rare and attributed example of the 1st pattern helmet with raw edge, apple green painted finish to the shell and Hawkes private purchase lining to the interior. Complete with two piece leather chinstrap. This example with the original four piece cloth cover and a bronzed Royal Engineers cap badge to the front, this still caked with mud. The overall condition is good, a rare untouched example. (£400 - £500) Vendor states worn by Major (later Lieutenant Colonel) Frank Lucas Netham Giles DSO, RE. This is the 1915 type B design of the British Brodie helmet, the apple green painted finish being an early feature. The book Helmets of The First World War by Michael Haselgrove & Branislav Radovic shows this pattern without cover on pages 144 and 145. It is described as John Leopold original 1915 Type B design. They also believe that only about 150 of these helmets were ever produced. See Lot 231 and 232 for his armbands and Lot 600 for his OBE and Order of the White Eagle warrants. |

A good scarce six panel blue cloth covered cork example by Christys London complete with blackened brass rose top and blackened helmet plate of crowned title strap with pear tree to centre. Complete with leather sweatband, chinstrap now absent. Cork sound, good shape, three of four ventilation grommets absent otherwise GC. (£80 - £120) |
| 854     Irish Militia Officers 1861-69 quilted shako. A scarce example, the body and crown in dark green cloth with a black patent leather peak. A blackened metal boss supports an green woollen ball tuft. The interior retains only part of the original crimson silk lining and complete with soft leather sweatband, and Chin strap of black patent leather with buckle. The interior with tailors details of Wright & Okley Dublin. The shako retains a good shape and remains a good exhibition item. Interior A.F. (badge absent) ... Contained in an associated storage tin.
