Elaborate Union and laurel sprays enclose a fretted cross pattée, a plinth at the top bears the legend Loyalty, and above this a depiction of the rising sun. At the base of the laurels a five pointed star. Two loop fasteners support the original centre backing, a piece of red leather. VGC. (£80 - £120) The badge certainly relates to the earliest period of the Volunteer Movement, when in more than a few cases the family crests, mottoes or arms of the first Officers Commanding were used on the first pattern badges and buttons, (eg, 9th Durham (Cowen) 2nd Lonon (Spottiswoode) 15th & 16th Wiltshire (Bradford) 4th Monmouthshire (Homfray). The combination of the cross pattée gules and the star(s) was used by only six registered families. Following an exhaustive search of the RV corps in 1860, the OC of the 6th (Great Grimsby) Corps, a Capt. William H Daubney was the only representative listed from those six families. The rising sun is an emblem not recognised in British heraldry during the circa 19th, and may allude to the Eastern location of Great Grimsby. The leading Australian collectors of today are convinced that the item does not apply to that Continent. Captain Daubney was commissioned Captain 20 March 1860, holding that position until 12 October 1863. |
