(£1,500 - £2,000) This coatee can be dated between 1843 and 1855. William Sydney Clements was born in Dublin in 1806 the second son of Lord of Leitrim. He was appointed an Ensign in the 43rd Foot in December 1824. In 1835 now with the rank of Captain he was placed on the Half Pay List In 1843 he was appointed Colonel of the then dormant Leitrim Militia. His elder brother died unmarried and therefore on the death of his father the title was passed on to him establishing him as the 3rd Earl of Leitrim. At the commencement of the Crimea War the Militia was embodied and moved its Head Quarters to Cork. Earl Leitrim resigned his commission in 1859. As a considerable land owner, he was fearlessly opposed to the Land Act, he did great work to improve the living conditions of his tenants, setting some of his rents, the lowest in Ireland. He was against the tradition of tenants having the right to sell and pursued evictions ruthlessly through the courts. A strict district JP, he made a great number of enemies, with an assassination attempt made on his life in 1870. A shot fired from an upstairs window missed locating his assassin by powder smoke he dashed into the house and arrested the man. Following this attempt on his life his harshness to the people increased, which bought him to the notice of the Riband Society. He continued to evict tenants and following one such eviction of a previous good tenant a Presbyterian widow, the local loathing for the man reached its peak. On the 2nd April 1878, following a tip off from one of his own servants, his coach was stopped on his own land by two assassins, his clerk was killed, his coachman put up a fight, but was also shot dead. The Earl was shot in the chest and arm, but at the age of 72, he fought his assassins to his last breath, finally been beaten to death, by the two men, who continued to beat his corpse after death. Despite a huge reward for information that would lead to the arrest of the murders, the local community remained silent. A number of Irish newspaper would conclude that this with his cruelty, harshness and Iron will regarding the right of property he deserved to die. |
